Weekly Chronicle 2018 #43

It was another decent week for me in the hobbies/gaming world, with getting a few models completed an a few games played.  I do not think I will be last year's Painting Points or Models Completed,  but that is also due to fact I do have a lot more games played this year than I have last year.  As of today, I have 68 games played this year compared to 31 games played for all of last year.  I have more than doubled my games played and there is still two months left in the year...who knows, maybe I will hit 100, if not, then that may be on my list of things to accomplish for 2019.  Going back to my point, with more games played, it equals less time to paint, but I am coming around to the point that I am OK with that.

For modeling last week, it was mainly just Guild Ball models (actually looking back at the week, it was all Guild Ball models).  I was able to finish for the Blacksmith's Guild, 'Veteran Cinder' and 'Bolt', and for my Butcher's Guild, 'Veteran Gutter' was completed.  I also managed to prep a few Guild Ball models and those should be completed this week.

On the gaming side for the week, I managed to play 4 games, 3 games of Guild Ball and 1 game of Arena Rex, not too shabby for me considering there was no event that I attended.

This week on Thursday kicks off Warmachine Weekend, and last week I had decided to cancel my hotel room for the event and will not be attending.  A few reasons led me up to this decision, one is that my son was not able to get the weekend off so I would be traveling alone (not a big deal as I had other friends attending), two the lack of information from the organizers (I know, I am playing a broken record) has been horrible this year, only just last night did they finally post any information for the doubles tournament for the weekend.  That is one event that if I had planned on playing would have liked to have known how many points was needed so you and your teammate can work on a list.  I understand real life an get in the way when you organize big events like this, but this event is not in its rookie stages, this is the 15th year for Warmachine Weekend and I would think after that amount of time, it would be better organized.  The main organizer is stepping down this year and it looks like it will be taken over by someone else, we shall see what happens.....as of right now I have no plans for WMW next year, but may be attending SteamCon US instead.

That's a wrap for this weeks Weekly Chronicle, it will be a semi-shortened week for me coming up, as I still had the days scheduled for vacation due to WMW, the wife and I instead will take a short trip to  Frankenmuth, MI for a little get away.

Weekly Chronicle 2018 #42 (Warmachine Weekend is a No Go)

As the title of my post says, with only 10 days before Warmachine Weekend starts, it looks like it is a No Go for my son and I to attend this year.  My son informed yesterday afternoon that he could not get the days off from work to be able to attend.  If I really wanted to (and I still may, I have not fully decided) I may decide to go down by myself.  Driving 6 hours by myself is not a problem, it i just that spending that kind of money to play in only 2 "fun events" they have listed may not be worth.  I have been complaining all year that the lack of information from them is ridiculous this year, 10 days to go and they still do not have all the information updated.  The only thing leaning me towards still going is that I do have a few friends attending and one has told me that gaming is 24 hours (so I probably would get a lot of friendly games in).  The cost of my tickets for my son and I cannot be refunded, but I had estimated it would save me around $750 (hotel/gas/food) if I elected to stay home.  I will probably sleep on it for a few more nights before I come up with my final decision and then cancel my hotel room if need be.

Moving onto some Guild Ball, now that my son has to work WMW and we have been getting in some games of Guild Ball, he said that he should be able to get off on Saturday November 10th.  Ft. Wayne, IN is having their first Season 4 Guild Ball tournament and the both of us will now be planning on attending.  So that means over the next 3 weeks, we will need to get in some more practice games.  I think we will also change up the Guilds the opponent plays so we can get some practice against different Guilds.  I have been meaning to attend a Guild Ball tournament for the last year and half, and never made it out to one (there is one this weekend too in Grand Rapids, but it is doubtful at the moment, if I stay home, then my son would be able to get in a practice game) so this would be our first official tournament.

Gaming last week was pretty decent, I was able to get in 3 games of Guild Ball in and 1 game of X-Wing which was yesterday afternoon.

For painting, I did manage to get 2 models completed for the Blacksmith's Guild, 'Alloy' and 'Burnish', and I have 'Veteran Cinder' ready to go on the painting table.

Guild Ball: Blacksmith's Guild 'Alloy'

With my son deciding to concentrate on the Blacksmith's Guild for awhile, I thought it was time to get a few more Blacksmith's on the painting table.  Currently there are 12 original Blacksmith's and a newer 'V Cinder' for a total of 13 models for the Guild.  My son and I own the original 12 models (actually x2) and I have 'V Cinder' on order and arriving shortly.  Up until this point, I have finished 8 of the models and today with 'Alloy', 9 are completed.  Just 4 more to go.

This is actually the first model I have finished for Guild Ball that has a new Season 4 card with it.

Daily Chronicle: Recap Michigan GT Wamachine/Hordes Michigan Cup

I was asked by a friend of mine (TJ) if I wanted to fill in as their 5th player in the WM/H Michigan Cup (they had a late dropout) this past Sunday October 14th and I decided to fill in and play my list I just practiced with the night before. Here is a description about the Michigan Cup: This is a slightly modified version of the popular World Team Championship competition format.  This challenging format features 5-person teams squaring off after a strategic round of pairing that can be as important as the actual games! Specific rules for this event at the Michigan GT are forthcoming but will follow the structure of the official WTC.

Sunday morning I woke up early and made the drive out to Lansing, MI.  The drive actually was not bad, Lansing is only 115 miles from me so it took just under 2 hours to arrive.  I missed out on attending last year due to car troubles, so this is the first year I had attended.  The hotel was easy to find and the conference center was nicely marked so I had no issues finding the ballroom.

After I dropped off my bags and got my army ready on my display tray, I took a quick stroll around the hall to see what other events were going on.  Warhammer 40K is their main attraction so that was obviously there, they had Star Wars Legion, X-Wing, Dark Age and some other events going on.  I even saw Dave Taylor there playing Dark Age.

After looking at the events that were happening, I checked to see if there was a vendor hall setup, they did not have a separate hall for the vendors, instead there were a few vendors around the walls in the main ballroom.  There was not really anything that I needed, one vendor did have a few WM/H items, but I think I am pretty good for now on models to keep me busy for awhile.  At the registration desk, I did see some Michigan GT dice that were black/silver/green that I thought would look cool with the Cryx army I am going to start working on, they were $10 for 10 so I decided to pick up a bag.

Now it was finally time to start gaming and my army was ready to go.  Our team was there just to have fun so there was no pressure to win...great, because I am not that good...LOL.

My first game was against a Hordes Legion player and it has been a long time since I played against Legion, probably way back to MkI.  I lost my 'Conquest' in this game and ended up losing 10-4 in Control Points.  At least I did not clock out, the clock is usually my nemesis.  I ended up destroying 49 points of Legion and my opponent scored 83.

My second game was against Warmachine Cryx, no one else wanted to play against Cryx, so being the filler player I was paired against him.  Since I do not get to play many different players much, just like in Game 1 against Legion, I have not played Cryx in a long time.  My opponent Thomas was from the Kalamazoo area and I actually met him a few years ago when I first moved to Michigan, my first game in Michigan was actually against him (I knew the name sounded familiar when we were matched up).  He decided to play his 9 'Slayer' spam list, and I was actually really curious how this plays.  So for me it was more of a game of learning to see how Cryx 'Slayers' worked.  Even though I lost in Control Points 5-0, it was a pretty close game, I destroyed 76 points to his 78 and just about half of them came from my 'Conquest'.  It was cool seeing my 'Conquest' take out 2.5 'Slayers' in one turn.

With only 6 teams in attendance this year (probably due to this years requirement of fully painted armies), Game 3 was going to be our final game of the day.  Once again I was paired up against a Cryx player.  Instead of running a 'Slayer' spam, Brando was running about 4 'Slayers' led by Deneghra2.  This game was not even close for me, I was slaughtered to the last man (actually 'Manhunter').  Control Points it was 9-3, but Vlad1 was assassinated and Brandon scored like 123 points to my 35.

So for the day I was 0-3, and unfortunately so was our team.  We ended up in 6th place (sounds better than last), but it was a fun day and I really glad I got to see how Cryx works.

Afterwards our team and the team from Kalamazoo decided to head to Buffalo Wild Wings for a cold one and reflect on the day....it was good times.

Daily Chronicle: A Day of Gaming 10/13/2018

First off I need to say that this is post #200 for the year.  It has always been a goal of mine since I started this blog back in 2009 (and my previous blog in 2008) to be able to write 200 posts in one year.  I was just shy of 200 back in 2010 with 192 posts, and last year I was on a decent pace to hit 200, but the last 2 months of year I really slowed down and finished with 171.  Since I have played a lot more games this year, this helped with my post counts since I try and do a quick Battle Report after each game (I always do not, but I try).

This past Saturday, my son and I had a day of gaming here at home.  Originally the plan was for our friend from Arizona (now living in Indiana) was going to come up and join us for the day, but unfortunately he was not able to attend, and since my son already requested the day off, we continued on with the games.

First game of the day was X-Wing 2.0.  The original plan was to play a big 500 point game and give us a 3 hour time limit, well by the time morning chores (pets) were completed and the game table setup, we decided to just play a standard 200 point game in and play it on the 75 minute clock (this way is still gave time in the day for our other games).

My son was playing his Rebel fleet (above left) and I was playing Scum (above right) once again.  I have been really liking the Scum in X-Wing 2.0 and probably will be my go to fleet in X-Wing 2.0 (with also occasionally playing Rebels and Empire).  The Rebels had 2 T-65 X-Wings (Luke and Wedge) and 2 Z-95 ships, and for my Scum, I had 1 Firespray (Boba Fett) and 2 Kihraxz Fighters (Talonbane Cobra and Graz)

The Rebels made quick work of my Kihraxz Fighters and at one point was down 4 ships to 1 ship.  Talonbane Cobra did manage to do some damage before he was destroyed.  So it came down to the pilot skills of Boba Fett to try and defeat the Rebels.  Boba Fett took care of the Z-95's and Wedge and now it was down to Luke vs Boba.

Boba was able to outmaneuver Luke and get a rear shot on Luke (just outside of Range 1) and damage Luke's remaining Hull point.  It was a win for Scum & Villainy.

After our game of X-Wing 2.0, we cleaned up the table, had a quick bite to eat and continued on with our gaming.

Games 2 and 3 for the day were actually Guild Ball.  Guild Ball Season 4 was officially released that day and we had an itch to try out the new rules and cards for our Guilds.  I decided I wanted to concentrate on my Butcher's Guild for Season 4 (with occasionally playing the other Guilds) and after a few days contemplating, my son decided to play the Blacksmith's Guild (his other two choices were Alchemist's and Hunter's).

The first game we played it slow, no clock, so that way we can refresh ourselves on the new rules/cards and just playing in general, it has been about 7 months since we each last played Guild Ball.

My Butcher's were putting out a lot of damage, and I was able to win 12-0 in Turn 2 (4 Takeouts / 1 Goal).  My son has not played the Blacksmith's much and still needs more practice with them which he is planning on doing.

Our second game of Guild Ball we played the same 2 lineups, again no clock, but we decided to pick up the pace a bit.  It was just about the same outcome for this game, Butcher's won 12-2 (4 Takeouts / 1 Goal), but this time the Blacksmith's did manage 2 points.  In this second game, I managed to do a little bit more with my Captain 'Ox' than just a support piece, and he managed to get the win for my Butcher's.

The time now was 5:15 PM and it was time for our evening chores (feed the dogs and make some dinner), after dinner we had 1 more game lined up.

Game 4 of the day was Warmachine.  Originally I wanted to play my Minions army and play with my 'Dracodile' since it has been a long time and I would like to play with them for fun at Warmachine Weekend, but I got a text from my friend asking if I can fill in as their 5th player in the Warmachine/Hordes Team Tournament at the Michigan GT the next day on Sunday.  So I figured I better get in a practice game of the list I am more comfortable with and what I played with at this year NOVA Open WM/H Team Tournament, my Khador army led by Vlad.

My son pulled out his Cygnar army he played with at NOVA and it was Stryker3 vs Vlad1.  At first I was quite shock with the amount of Infantry he had on the table, but I had a very good Turn 2 and managed to clear a lot of them off the table.

In the end it came down to my 'Conquest' colossal assassinating Stryker3.

4 games in a day...wow that was fun.  I wish we could have played the 500 point game of X-Wing as originally planned, but the 200 point game was fun too and good practice.

Weekly Chronicle 2018 #41

Last week was a really good week for me in terms of gaming, and at least getting something completed model wise.

For painting, I was finally able to get 'Brun Cragback & Lug' completed for my Minions army.  I wanted these models completed for Warmachine Weekend, and mission was accomplished.  I should be all set for WMW model wise, but I may try and get one more model completed, we shall see, I may be putting some Guild Ball models up next on the painting table.

For gaming, I would have to say it was one of the best weeks all year.  Last week I was able to play 8 games across 4 different systems.  Saturday my son and I had a games day at home, and yesterday I attended the Michigan GT for Warmachine/Hordes.  I will be breaking down those days into separate posts, either later today or tomorrow.

One more thing to point out about Warmachine Weekend, the other day they posted in Facebook that next week they should have more info on events....."next week"... that only leave 2 weeks before the event to get models and armies ready.  Everyone tells me its a fun event to attend, but the lack of information is really not acceptable.

Hordes: Minions Brun Cragback & Lug (Solo)

I had one model on my list that I wanted to complete for the upcoming Warmachine Weekend next month and that was 'Brun Cragback & Lug' and now they are completed.

For fun pickup games and Iron Arena games at WMW, I am thinking about bringing my Minions army with and try out a 'Rask' "Will Work For Food" list with my 'Dracodile' and I needed another Lesser Warlock for my list, so I decided on 'Brun Cragback & Lug'.

It was actually this model years and years ago that got me interested in Hordes and the Minions.  It was just many years later that I finally purchased the model and now they are painted.  I was hoping to give them a try tonight, but with attending the Michigan GT tomorrow, I need a little more practice with my Khador.  Maybe next week they will see the tabletop for a game.

Daily Chronicle: Upcoming Warmachine/Hordes Michigan Cup 10/14/2018

This weekend is the Michigan GT in Lansing Michigan.  It is a gaming convention with multiple events like Warhammer 40K, Age of Sigmar, Bolt Action and Warmachine/Hordes.

Last year I had planned to attend and play in the Warmachine/Hordes Championships (75 point Steamroller), but car issues had kept me from attending.  This year I had no intentions on attending.  My son and I just came back from the NOVA Open last month, and I spent all last week on vacation with my wife.  Plus this is the same weekend as SteamCon USA and if I was attending one of these events, I probably would have tried to attend SteamCon USA, but I was not attending either......up until today.

Privateer Press: Cygnar Mystery Box

A friend of mine in Kalamazoo recently purchased a couple of the Privateer Press Mystery Boxes (hoping for Khador) and he ended up receiving a Cryx and Cygnar box.  He posted on the Facebook Groups looking to trade someone and there were not any takers, so I contacted him if he was willing to sell the Cygnar box.  Well he did and we met today for the exchange.

My sons Warmachine army is Cygnar, so this box if for him, he really wanted to have the 'Hurricane' model.  This mystery box is a bit different than the other Cygnar ones that have been posted, instead of an Infantry Unit, it came with another Warjack (which my son and I actually prefer).

Weekly Chronicle 2018 #37

Another week has flown by and at least I did manage to get a few models completed last week ('Nero' for Arena Rex and 'The King of the Dead' for MeSBG) and a game of Arena Rex played on Saturday night.  My son and I were hoping to also try X-Wing 2.0 after our Arena Rex game, but the organizing of all the new 2.0 items is taking longer than expected.

This week we are hoping to get in some more games of Arena Rex with my friend TJ, and more than likely finally trying out X-Wing 2.0.  We'll see if time allows to get in another game of MeSBG.

Warmachine Weekend is approaching fast in early November, and to be honest, right now I am not to excited about it.  I think the main reason is the lack of information from the event organizers.  Their website has been offline all year, and with 45 days left till the start of the event, there still is no information.  A few weeks back I even posted on their Facebook page, with no response.  It would be nice to see what events are happening so I know what armies I want to bring with and play.  If it was not for their "no refund" policy, I think I would have asked for a refund.  I am still thinking about sending them an email asking for a refund for their lack of information.

I have too many games and not enough time, new TV shows are starting up next week and it is going to get even worse.

Also in early November, AdeptiCon will be releasing their events schedule (take note Warmachine Weekend) and I need to decide what I will be playing in 2019.  More than likely I will be giving Arena Rex a try at AdeptiCon, after that, I will need to see what fits in my schedule around Arena Rex, and what games are still interesting to me.  Who knows, it may be some MeSBG, X-Wing, or even Batman.

Weekly Chronicle 2018 #35 (NOVA Open Recap)

Well the NOVA Open is now completed.  You may have (or not) noticed that there was no post for Day 4 yesterday, that is because we decided to leave for home a little bit earlier so we could make it back at  decent hour.  So I got to miss "Speedmachine" and all my practice for it, but I am ok with it.

This was the first NOVA Open I attended and I had a really good time, here are few pros and cons (nothing major, just my thoughts).

Pros:

• Location; it was nice being really close to Washington DC and being able to take a few hours for sightseeing.
• Food Trucks; it was great to have food trucks right outside the main entrance to grab a quick lunch or even dinner if we didn't want t stray to far away from the hotel.
• Silent Auction/Charity Raffle; that is a nice touch for their causes.
• Bar/Food Discount; they offered 20% off at the breakfast area for coffee and pastries and each night the bar had a selection of $4 beers.
• Vendors; it is always great to have vendors at cons like this since I am more of an impulse shopper.  Most of the vendors also kept longer hours which was nice.

Cons:

• Physical Space; the physical space for me I thought was a bit weird and tight.  Some other players may like the separation, but I thought the separation was too much.  They had events across four different floors, and if you did not have an event on that floor, you would never visit there or the other games.  I can understand the space limitations and some can say the quietness is nice, but if we did not look for the Warhammer 40K hall (on a different floor) we would have never known it was being played there.  I understand that is the limitation of the hotel and how big the event is growing, but it may be time to look for a smaller convention hall in the area.
• Gaming Space; I really loved the extra side boards that used in between each 4x4 mat for Warmachine/Hordes gaming area, the problem then became they had no dedicated Iron Arena area space.  You had to find an open event table and hope it was not going to be used (it had happened to us and we had to clean up our stuff and find another table).  LVO/AdeptiCon they all have dedicated tables for Iron Arena.
• Open Gaming; there were no tables or an area setup for Open Gaming.  They had a board game room, and if you asked nicely they would let you play in there (until needed for a board game).
• Vendor Area: this was in a weird location.  It was setup in the common areas of the main floor all spread out in between the elevators and escalators, no dedicated hall for them.  It was nice you could get to them easily, but it was a little sporadic down there.  Some of the vendors were even on a different floor. Having the vendors in their own would be better, and that common area could be setup with open gaming tables.

Daily Chronicle: NOVA Open 2018 Day 3 9/1/2018

Today started bright and early at 7:00 AM with the "Breakfastmachine" Warmachine/Hordes Tournament.  "Breakfastmachine" was a 50 point, 1 list tournament and we were served coffee, donuts and danishes while we were playing our games.  Late last night I made a Warcaster change in my list and went back to 'Vlad 1' that I had played in the Team Tournament on Thursday, I felt I had a little more practice with 'Vlad 1' than 'Harkevich'.

Well, I fell that change helped me quite a bit today.  My first game was against Minions led by 'Jaga Jaga', I actually had never played against her before and it was the battle of "Signs & Portents".  I ended up clearing out most of his army (it was Beast heavy) and won by Assassination (and I was up Control Points 4-0) .

My second game was against Minions once again, but this one was led by 'Maelok' and 3 Units of 'Posse' and 2 'Wrastlers'.  This game was a bit tougher for me as the 'Posse' jammed me right away and was denying any Zones.  I did manage to break through the lines and made an Assassination attempt on 'Maelok' with a 'Juggernaut/, I did some damage and he transferred the rest to a 'Wrastler'.  My next turn I finished off both 'Wrastlers' so that he had nothing he can transfer damage too anymore, I then finshed off 'Maelok' with my 'Juggernaut'.  This game I was down on Control Points and was about to clock out, I played my last turn super fast to get the win.

My son ended up losing both of his games, he had a tough match up in game 1, and his game 2 looked more enjoyable and was winning the game, but could not beat the clock and lost the game.

At this point I was 2-0 and in the Top 4, but my son and I elected to drop out so we could spend a few hours actually visiting DC.  Being this close to DC, I did not want my son to regret not actually visiting it.  So we did the usual of visiting Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, WW2 Memorial and then spent a few hours walking through the Air & Space Museum.

Once we relaxed for a little bit, my son and I headed back downstairs for a few games of Arena Rex.  We played 1 game, which I lost again, then grabbed some pizza for a quick dinner.  After dinner we played another game and my Ludus Magnus finally got a win.  I then watched my son play TJ in a game, followed by the 3 of us playing 2 games of a 3v3v3 battle, which I lost both games.  But I did manage to get 4 games of Arena Rex in tonight.

Daily Chronicle: NOVA Open 2018 Day 2 8/31/2018

Well Day 2 of the NOVA Open is completed.  Luckily it was not as tiring of a day as yesterday was.  Today was an open day for my son and I and we got to sleep in a bit before we headed down.  Once we finally made our way down we did a little bit more shopping before we started playing any games.  I picked up another gaming mat from Tablewar and went with a Grassy Green 4'x4' mat.  Tablewar did not have it there with them, but he is doing free shipping with that purchase.  Then I decided to pick up a few more Cryx models (2 Slayers) to go with the Cryx Mystery Box I received a few weeks ago.

Once we finally got our shopping done it was close to Noon and started to setup for a game of Batman Miniature Game, this was the first time I was giving BMG a try.  I was playing Banes older starter crew, and my son was playing with Batman and some QRT models.  The game took a long time to play as I was constantly looking back in the rulebook and trying to soak everything in.  Banes crew ended up winning (killing all the models) by the end of Turn 6.  I think I really need to be "sold more" on this game.  After a few more game under my belt and starting to memorize the rules, the game play should then be smoother.

After our BMG game, it was time to get in some Warmachine/Hordes 15 Point "Speedmachine" practice in.  I really wanted to get in more practice with 'Karchev' and today was a perfect for that.  I am really liking playing 'Karchev' in this list and this list did pretty well today winning both games.  I think I'll be ready for Sunday.

We then went out to one of the food trucks and grabbed a sandwich to bring up to our room for dinner and relaxed for a while.

Finally to close out the day, we sat in the Seminar for the Middle-earth Stratgy Battle Game and learned more about the future gaming of MeSBG.

After the Seminar we stood in line to purchase the new LoTR Army Profiles book along with the new starter set Pelennor Fields.  Adam Troke was standing there after check out and he autographed my copy.

It was a good day...

Daily Chronicle: NOVA Open 2018 Day 1 8/30/2018

Well Day 1 is now complete for us and we are exhausted from the car ride and getting in some games of Warmachine/Hordes in the Team Tournament.

We arrived to the hotel just before noon and decided to check out the Vendor Hall before we prepared for our event, once we were done looking around and did a little shopping, then it was time to get ready for our event.  All 3 of us were tired and had a feeling we were not going to do any good.

Well after Game 1, all 3 of us won our games, myself and TJ won by Control Points and my son won by Assassination, and after Round 1, our Team had the most Control Points and Army Points killed, and we were placed on Table #1 for Round 2.

Round 2 was not as good for us as Round 1, TJ won his game by Assassination, I lost my game on the clock but it was a close battle and I was up 10-6 in Control Points and was just about to Assassinate his Warlock.  My son got beat up pretty badly in a Cygnar vs Cygnar battle.

After Round 2 was over, we decided to call it quits and get some dinner, we were all tired and hungry by now.

I am really really glad tomorrow is an open day for my son and I.

Daily Chronicle: 1 Day Till The NOVA Open

In 24 hours we should just about be pulling into the Hyatt Regency Crystal City and checking in for the 2018 NOVA Open.  We are leaving tonight and driving straight through, so tomorrow is going to be a very long day playing right into the Warmachine/Hordes Team Tournament.  Luckily I do not take tournaments too seriously and I am just playing for fun.  Who knows, maybe after 2-3 rounds we may retire (but we will have to see with our teammate first).

Am I ready for the events? Not really...but who cares if I win or lose, lets just through some dice.  Saturday and Sunday events I am really looking forward to ("Breakfastmachine" and "Speedmachine") these events do not take the whole day and leaves some time to do some other things.  I am still glad I dropped the Guild Ball event on Friday to open a day of gaming (I am even bringing a few Batman miniatures and may do a quick demo).

I plan on posting some pics each night when I get back to the room, we shall see how that goes...stay tuned...
