2018 Year in Review

There are two blog posts that I enjoy writing the most each year, the first one is my "What's in store for" (next year), and the second one is my "Year in Review".

2018 started with a "What's in store for 2018" so we will use that post as basis for our year in review.

Guild Ball
2018
Painting Goal:  This is a tough one.  I would love to say to be able to complete every Guild Ball model that I have so that all Guilds are completed.  It is doable since I currently probably have around 40 models left to complete.  I have the new six for both the Farmer's and Blacksmith's, the second six for the Brewer's and the remaining are for my Mortician's and Union.  I do have a few one off's left (Smoke and Lucky) and I am wrapping up Skatha for my son's Hunter's Guild.  I think realistically I will shoot to complete the Farmer's, Blacksmith's and Brewer's (along with the few one off's).  This will give me some room for some of the new Minor Guilds that will be released in 2018.

Gaming Goal:  Here we go, I always want to be able to play more games each year, but real life always gets in the way.  I prefer the collecting/painting over the gaming anyways (hence the reason why I have every Guild for Guild Ball), but the plan for 2018 will be to concentrate on two gaming systems (Guild Ball and Warmachine/Hordes).  AdeptiCon 2018 is coming up at the end of March (coincides with the end of my first painting quarter) and for Guild Ball I am signed up for the AdeptiCon Championships on Friday, and the Homelands Cup on Sunday.  Here's my problem, I have yet to play in an official event for Guild Ball, all my games have just been friendlies.  So that is my goal for 2018 is to play in more Guild Ball events.

Painting Goal:  This past year turned out to be a pretty decent year in painting my Guild Ball.  I started the year off strong, had a lull, and then kicked it right back up recently.  Unfortunately the second six Farmer's nor my Union did not get completed, but I did finish the Blacksmith's, Brewer's, Mortician's and my son's Hunter's.  Steamforged also added some new Veteran models to existing Guilds so i wanted to get some of those completed.  The Minor Guilds that were released this year, Ratcatcher's, Falconer's and Navigator's did not see any paint on them.  Stay tuned tomorrow to see where they fall on my list for 2019.

Gaming Goal: Guild Ball gaming did not start off as strong as I had hoped for in 2018 and actually swapped out events at AdeptiCon.  The gaming stayed slow for me until this past October with the release of Season 4.  Season 4 really got me excited for the game and I finally attended 2 Guild Ball tournaments.  Before the release of Season 4, I had only played 3 games, my total for the year is now 32 games, that is how much I have been enjoying Season 4.

Warmacine/Hordes
2018
Painting Goal:  I still have quite a few models in my backlog for Warmachine/Hordes (mainly with Trollbloods), but I need to concentrate 2018 on my two main factions, Khador for Warmachine and Minions for Hordes.  In those regards, the backlog is not too big.  I have a few Units and Warjacks that I need to complete for Khador and there are some new models coming out for Minions at the end of this month that will take high priority in my painting queue.  Let's not also forget the new Minions 'Dracodile' that will be posted tomorrow.

Gaming Goal:  For the past year I have been telling myself that I am going to try and play in the 'local' (40 miles one way) WM/H league in South Bend.  I have yet to play in that league.  It runs for 5 weeks, then they take a week or two off and start back up and continues through the year.  The first session for 2018 will be starting up shortly.  If I want to remember the rules for WM/H, I have to play more (as with Guild Ball), so I will try and finally play in some of the league sessions when I know it does not interfere with any vacations.  On Saturday at AdeptiCon my son and I are signed up for the WM/H Team Tournament, so I need to make sure I know what I am doing.

Painting Goal:  I did really good in the beginning of the year painting my Warmachine/Hordes models, all but one of the Minion models were completed and I also did some work on my Khador army.  There are still a lot of Warmachine/Hordes models in my backlog though and we shall see when they get done.

Gaming Goal:  I still never attended the "league" down in South Bend, but I did play a lot of WM/H for me.  Playing in events at AdeptiCon, NOVA Open, Michigan GT and the occasional casual games with my friends saw me playing 38 games of WM/H last year.

Events
2018
I enjoy attending events through out the year (when once again life doesn't get in the way) and the funds are available.  Not always to compete in events, but just also hanging out and getting in some friendly games.

2018 will be very similar to my plans for last year with a few subtractions and additions.

For the last couple of years I have been starting out the year with the Las Vegas Open, well this year I will not be attending.  There is no organized play for Guild Ball this year, so the only interest would be Warmachine/Hordes.  With AdeptiCon only two months later, I am flying my son out for that.

AdeptiCon in March, as just mentioned above, this one is a must.  Now that I am in the Midwest again, this is a 'must' attend event for any gamer.  Registration opened up early December and my son and I are all signed up.  This year I also decided to book the hotel onsite in case we have any late night gaming (though I'll probably be tired).

Vacation plans will once again get in the way for the Summer months (at the end of May I will be going back to Arizona and moving my oldest back with us to Michigan), so the funds for June will then be limited.  Muse on Mini's throws a Con that same weekend we will be driving and then there is Privateer Press Lock & Load in either June or July.  Lock & Load would be very fun to attend, but the airfare for two to Seattle will get pricey (along with the hotel room).  I try and attend events where I can still drive where gas is still cheaper than airfare.  We shall see about Lock & Load, but my hopes are not high for this one.

Now comes the Fall/Winter and there is a quite a few I would like to attend, once again funds will limit our choices along with dates.

September has the Nova Open in the Washington DC area over Labor Day Weekend, this one is reachable by car for us and is an option.  I have never attended the Nova Open, but here that it is a really big event.

October is the Michigan GT in Lansing.  Mainly it is for Warhammer 40K, but over the past few years has branched out to other gaming systems.  Last year I was signed up for the WM/H Tournament, but a totaled van kept me from attending.

November has Warmachine Weekend in the St. Louis area (just a 6 hour drive for us).  I really feel this will be the year my son and I will finally attend the Warmachine Weekend.  I also have some friends from here that will be attending and I enjoy the 'fun' types of events that they run.  I am just not happy with the lack of information (and late information) they provide on their website.  I like to plan my events well ahead of time (so I can schedule the time off), and it took them forever to get a listing of events up on their site.  Besides that little issue, I have high hopes for this event (especially if we do not attend Lock & Load).  More than likely it will be one or the other.

Now we come to December and this past year it was the first ever SteamCon USA in Chicago.  Steamforged Games recently asked social media for any other locations that people are interested in.  So we will have to wait and see for this one.  If by chance it is again in Chicago, we are most definitely there (as long as there is some time gap from WMW), if it is in any other city we will need to see how far that drive and costs will be.  I also have to take into account my son will probably have a job working weekends, so I have to plan these accordingly where they will not interfere too much with his work schedules.

I missed on two events listed above for 2018.  I attended AdeptiCon, NOVA Open and the Michigan GT.  I missed out on Warmachine Weekend and SteamCon USA.  One event that was not on my list was GenCon.  I actually made it to GenCon this past year for one day to do some vendor shopping.

My son and I were scheduled to attend Warmachine Weekend, but the LACK of event information really put a bad taste in my mouth.  Waiting until the week of the event to post any rules is ridiculous.  Then my son was not able to get that weekend off, so I decided just not to go.

Steamcon USA was also missed this past year.  I had thought it may be taking place in December like in 2017, but they had moved it up to October.  I already had a family vacation planned for October so there was no way I was going to be able to do both..... next year.

Other Games On The Radar

Malifaux
2018
The game of Malifaux has always intrigued me even though I have never played the game.  I really do like the look of the models.  There is a group in South Bend that plays every Tuesday night so I know there is a local following (although this past year at the Michigan GT all the Malifaux events were cancelled due to a lack of registrations).  I think if by chance I do get into this game, I need to stick just to one Faction.  I will need to control the collector in me.  One drawback is that my son never really had an interest in this game, so that may keep me from playing.

Nothing happened with Malifaux for me in 2018, though I was tempted twice at AdeptiCon and GenCon.  Looks like Malifaux will be removed from any future list.

Batman Miniatures Game
2018
I am just throwing this one out there for now.  My son plays this game and he is playing it Friday at AdeptiCon while I play Guild Ball.  I am intrigued by Team Arrow so you never know what will happen.  Unlike Malifaux above, I do not think that anyone locally plays this game.  So it's a complete opposite from above.  No locals but my son loves it and with Malifaux it has locals but not my son.

So right now these two games are just a small blip on the radar.

I did play one game of BMG at the NOVA Open with my son.  As much as he loves the game, it really does not do too much for me.  I purchased a 3x3 gaming mat and some terrain for the game also.  I know I will be getting a few games in next year to be more of a punching bag for son to practice for AdeptiCon.

Bolt Action
2018
So where was Bolt Action in my above plans for 2018.  Well originally it was going to be a fairly large part and my son and I were going to play in the Team Tournament at AdeptiCon.  But our interests has slid a bit (mainly with Guild Ball for me).  Now I still plan on keeping all my armies, will I paint anything for them...maybe...my passions change through out the year.  Will I get some games in...I really think so, especially when my son moves up, it will not be frequent, but every now and then.

Absolutely nothing was done with Bolt Action in regards to Painting or Gaming, that does not mean it is totally off my radar.

That is all that I had on my list for 2018, now here are some new additions and comebacks that I saw in 2018.

New Additions:

Arena Rex
I saw this game for the first time at AdeptiCon 2017, then again at AdeptiCon 2018 and both times the game looked very tempting.  Well finally at GenCon I made the purchase of models for my son and I.  I do not have them all painted yet, but I did do a lot of work getting terrain completed for the game.  I really enjoy this game for the quick play.  I was not able to sign up for any events at AdeptiCon 2019 coming up (they all interfered with other events), but I still plan on playing the game in 2019 and working on the models I have.  I did manage to get in 13 games of Arena Rex this year.

Comebacks:

X-Wing
X-Wing 2.0 was released in September of this past year.  Just like with the release of Season 4 of Guild Ball, the release of X-Wing 2.0 reignited a spark in for the game.  Not as much as it did with Guild Ball, but enough for my son and I to keep playing the game casually and even signing up for an event at AdeptiCon next year.

Final Thoughts
If you are still with me through all of this, I would have to say that it was a really good year for me Painting/Gaming, especially in the Gaming department.  I am usually lucky to only play 20-30 games in year, and 2018 saw a record 93 games played.  Also with all that gaming, I was able to surpass last years mark in Painting Points.

One other accomplishment I had in 2018 was hitting 200 blog posts in a year, that was a goal of mine ever since I started blogging.  2018 was a record year for me with this post being #284.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's post and lets see if anything changes for 2019.

Daily Chronicle: NOVA Open 2018 Day 1 8/30/2018

Well Day 1 is now complete for us and we are exhausted from the car ride and getting in some games of Warmachine/Hordes in the Team Tournament.

We arrived to the hotel just before noon and decided to check out the Vendor Hall before we prepared for our event, once we were done looking around and did a little shopping, then it was time to get ready for our event.  All 3 of us were tired and had a feeling we were not going to do any good.

Well after Game 1, all 3 of us won our games, myself and TJ won by Control Points and my son won by Assassination, and after Round 1, our Team had the most Control Points and Army Points killed, and we were placed on Table #1 for Round 2.

Round 2 was not as good for us as Round 1, TJ won his game by Assassination, I lost my game on the clock but it was a close battle and I was up 10-6 in Control Points and was just about to Assassinate his Warlock.  My son got beat up pretty badly in a Cygnar vs Cygnar battle.

After Round 2 was over, we decided to call it quits and get some dinner, we were all tired and hungry by now.

I am really really glad tomorrow is an open day for my son and I.

Here is a few pics from today.

Daily Chronicle: Litko Movement Template and Fatigue Tokens for Arena Rex

I have been using Litko for nearly 15 years now when it comes to having custom tokens made.  Way back in the day I had used to them to make some LotR tokens, and then also some fire tokens (which I re-purposed in yesterday’s post).  So when I recently got into the Arena Rex game, I was looking for movement gauges and Fatigue tokens.  Each model comes with a resin Fatigue marker, but I was worried I may lose them and wanted some in a little bit more bulk.

I came across a few sites that make movement gauges from laser MDF, but I was not looking for wood, I prefer acrylic for my gauges/tokens.  I then headed over to Litko to see if they made anything specific for Arena Rex.  I did not find anything specific for the game, but came across a movement gauge for AoS that can be customized.  The gauge came with 6”, 3”, 1” and 1/2” sides, I thought that would be perfect.  Since these were customized, I was able to upload a logo for Arena Rex and include some custom text, I decided to make the custom text match the Ludus’.

Next I looked for something that can be used as Fatigue tokens, there were a lot of options available that could be used, but I wanted something simple.  I took a look at their custom tokens and decided that I would just use a circle token with the letter “X”.  In Arena Rex, one side of the token is usually blank and marks you as Fatigue 1, the other side is Fatigue 2 or Exhausted, I thought just a “X” would be perfect for Exhausted.  Nice and simple.

Today my gauges and tokens arrived, and I am very happy with how they turned out.

Daily Chronicle: Dragon Fall 2018 (Oct 19th-21st)

There is a fairly new convention in the Chicagoland area called Dragon Fall   Dragon Fall 2018 will be taking place the weekend of October 19th-21st 2018 at the Waterford Banquet and Conference Center in Elmhurst IL.  Dragon Fall is going into their 4th year and they claim to be “Midwest’s Premier Tabletop Gaming Event”, I guess with AdeptiCon now claiming to be the “World’s Premier Wargaming Convention” is was ok for Dragon Fall to claim the Midwest.

I have yet to attend a Dragon Fall convention, in it’s first year 2015, I was still living in Arizona.  Then in 2016 I had to go back down to Arizona to visit my son since it is his birthday weekend.  Last year in 2017, my wife flew down to Arizona for the same birthday visit (and I was home with the puppy) and now in 2018, I may actually attend for one day.

Dragon Fall offers a full weekend of gaming, but I had noticed in the events listings that there was no Warmachine/Hordes events.  I am actually ok with that for this year.  With attending NOVA Open in 2 weeks, then Warmachine Weekend in November, an event in between those that I will not be playing Warmachine/Hordes may be a good thing.

So what am I to do if I attend Dragon Fall? I no longer play Warhammer 40K, nor Age of Sigmar, there is a Bolt Action event (which I have not played since AdeptiCon 2017), and then I came across Arena Rex.  Perfect timing I might say.  With myself just getting into Arena Rex, a one day event sounds like it may be a good time.  There are no details listed yet for the event, but I am assuming that 6 Stages will be needed for each Cohort (most models count as 1 Stage, mounted models are usually 2 Stages).  When I get back from the NOVA Open, it would give me about 6 weeks to finish models and get in a lot of practice games...this may be doable.

I have not registered yet for the event (seeing how it will cost me $35), but I am seriously considering it.  More than likely I will come to a final decision while I am away at NOVA Open.

Arena Rex: Let The Battles Begin

In yesterday’s post about attending GenCon on Sunday, I had mentioned that I am now vested in the game called Arena Rex.  Arena Rex has been around for quite a few years now and started off on Kickstarter back in 2013.  Each year, it seems like there is more and more interest in the game.  I first came across Arena Rex back at AdeptiCon 2017, my son and I walked by their vendor booth and I had thought the models were very nice looking.  At the time I was still vested in Bolt Action and I knew I still had a lot of Warmachine/Hordes models to build and paint, plus we were just getting into the game of Guild Ball and I was not able to get into another game.  At this years AdeptiCon 2018, we came across the game again in the vendor area, but once again “not enough time for anymore games”.  It had turned out that my friend TJ had bought into the game and purchased a Morituri Starter Set, so I was still considering it.  Fast forward a few months and GenCon is approaching, as I mentioned yesterday I originally had no plans on attending, but once I did, I decided to look into Arena Rex again (knowing they were going to have an area setup in the Vendor Hall).  I knew Arena Rex makes a gaming mat for their game, so if I was going to get into the game, I wanted to have a mat and it would be easier to pick it up actually onsite.

So what drew me into Arena Rex now?  I enjoy small model count games that play quick.  Less time to dig out all the models and setup the battlefield and to actually play the game.  Arena Rex average playtime is around 30-45 minutes (from what I have been told), I am sure our first few games will run a bit longer as we get familiar with the rules.  I also enjoy playing games that do not have a complicated rules set, which Arena Rex does not.  I want to get into battle as quick as possible and roll some dice and see who the victor is.  I am also currently on hold with Guild Ball until Season 4 releases in October and then we shall see what happens.  I still enjoy Guild Ball, but at the moment it is a little bit more complicated than Arena Rex, that is why I probably like playing my Butcher’s Guild in Guild Ball...go and kill things.  I always enjoyed the concept of a “Beer & Pretzel” game, and I think Arena Rex may just be this for me.

Here is a description of the game taken directly from the Arena Rex website.

Arena Rex is a game of gladiatorial combat.  Battles of 3 to 6 combatants per side are recommended, and take approximately 30 to 40 minutes to play. Simple, intuitive rules offer myriad tactical possibilities.  Maneuver and arena terrain play key roles in the game along with a fatigue-based activation system that twists a traditional round structure in new and exciting ways.

Arena Rex is a miniatures line that features high quality 35mm gladiators, and encompasses not just classic styles, but much of the ancient world.  Gladiators train together in ludi; the classic styles of Ludus Magnus compete with more exotic fighters from farther afield.  Anachronisms are present and intentional -- the ability to combine the best aspects of disparate things is just as important as unity of purpose, and this is reflected in Arena Rex not just aesthetically, but mechanically.  Players can choose gladiators freely, whether for their look, their playstyle, or because of unique benefits and synergies within a given ludus

Getting back to my visit of the Arena Rex booth at GenCon, well I walked out of there with almost two complete factions.  Legio XIII for my son, and Ludus Magnus for myself.  I picked up the Starter Set and Faction Dice for each of these, then I added some models for both factions so we could expand to playing some 6v6 games which seems to be the size in tournaments.

Legio XIII

Ludus Magnus

I had to add ‘Leo’ into the mix, because what gladiator arena doesn’t have a lion, then I also added ‘Cato’ and ‘Ladon’ to my Ludus Magnus faction simply because I love the look of the ‘Ladon’ model.

‘Ladon’

Now comes the assembling and painting of the models.  My plan will be to first assemble the Starter Set models and get in a few 3v3 games in against my son while we familiarize ourselves with the rules.  Then I will go ahead and start to tackle the painting of the models.  As of now there are not too many official events for Arena Rex, so having fully painted at the moment is not a must have.  I do possibly see myself playing in an Arena Rex tournament at next years AdeptiCon in March, so that will be my goal for my Ludas Magnus faction.

Battle Report: WM/H 7/11/2018 Khador vs Trollbloods (50 Points)

I was supposed to have a game lined up for tonight versus my Trollbloods friend out in Kalamazoo, but yesterday afternoon he asked if we can play last night instead.  So my son and I packed our bags and drove out East.

We setup the table once again for the Mirage scenario (I actually really like this scenario and it is very lively) and I elected to play my same ‘Vlad 1’ Khador list that I had played on Monday night against my son.  My friend TJ played a ‘Doomshaper 3’ Trollblood list with a ‘Mountain King’ and ‘Mulg’.  I wont go into too many details, but forgetting my Feat that would have been a perfect situation to take out the ‘Mountain King’ really hurt me in this game.  I ended up losing 9-4 on the top of Turn 4 and lost all 5 of my Warjacks.  I think all I had left was ‘Vlad 2’ and 1 ‘Kayazy Eliminator’ where as the Trollbloods still had quite a few models left.  When TJ popped ‘Doomshaper’s 3’ Feat, it was like I was giving free health back to his Warbeasts.  I got to think about the mistakes I made after the game (while my son was getting in a game against TJ, which ‘Stryker 2’ Assassinated ‘Doomshaper 3’) and I can see where I should have done things differently.  I spent time shooting the Objective and I should have gotten the ‘Widowmaker Scouts’ in a better position and taken out the one Unit that he had.

I do not care if I win or lose (really), I just need the more playing time and learning my models better, and over the last few weeks that has helped a lot.  I am spending less time reading the cards/app (but I still do when need to) and that is helping me with the deathclock.  Soon I’ll be ready to give my 75 point lists a try.

Battle Report: WM/H 7/9/2018 Khador vs Cygnar (50 Points)

After having spent some time the last few games practicing for 15 Points “Speedmachine”, it was time to get in some practice of “Breakfastmachine”.  “Breakfastmachine” is an event at this years NOVA Open played with 50 Points, and while playing your game, you are served breakfast items to eat, I could not pass on an event like this.

I am still testing out different lists for this event, but for last night I went with ‘Vlad 1’ and my “Jaws of Wolf” theme, my son was playing his Cygnar army led by ‘Stryker 1’.

This was our first time playing the new scenario “Mirage” and from the looks of it I could tell it would be a good game to score some Control Points.  Also since I am playing a Warjack heavy “Jaws of Wolf” theme, I wanted to see how my list would do without any Rectangle Zones.

My Khador went first I basically ran all my Warjacks up the table, playing with 2 ‘Kodiaks’ it was nice to have them gain an extra 2”.  I had a ‘Widowmaker Marksman’ and ‘Widowmaker Scouts’ that were on my right flank, with Advance Deployment they walked up to my nearest Flag and sat there, from that position my ‘Marksman’ and 3 of my ‘Scouts’ were able to get some shots off on the enemies Objective and doing 6 points of damage.  These guys basically say there most of the game and destroyed the Objective for 1 CP.  They were useful for that and if needed to could have entered int the farthest Circle Zone.  ‘Vlad 1’ was in my Circle Zone casting “Signs & Portents” most of the game.  I had ‘Kayazy Eliminators’ and a ‘Berserker’ on my left flank along with ‘Yuri’. ‘Yuri’ did not do too much in this game and I should have played him towards the center of the table going for the Flag in  the forests.

After Turn 2 the score was tied 2-2, Turn 3, I was able to kill the Objective and then also contest his Circle Zone and Flag so I was up 5-2 after the top of Turn 3.  Bottom of Turn 3 Cygnar had to try and kill 2 Warjacks that were contesting his Circle Zone, a ‘Juggernaut’ and a ‘Kodiak.  With some help from ‘Stryker 1’ he was able to kill the ‘Juggernaut’.  There was not much else he could do and at the bottom of Turn 3, Khador won 7-2.

I played out the top of Turn 4 just to see what I could do next.  I set up my 2 ‘Kodiaks’ with the most Focus to prepare one of them to Charge ‘Stryker 1’.  My ‘Widowmaker Scouts’ actually cleared up most of a Unit and it actually gave room for both of my ‘Kodiaks’ to Charge ‘Stryker 1’ if need be....I only needed the 1 ‘Kodiak’ to finish off ‘Stryker 1’ (with the help of my “Signs & Portents”.

I have another 50 Point game lined up against my Trollbloods friend this Thursday night, more than likely I will play the same list, but I may try a Warcaster change.

Battle Report: WM/H 6/28/2018 Speedmachine (15 Points)

The nice thing about being on vacation for a few days, I am able to get in some gaming and painting.  Yesterday was our day to stay home and get in a few games of Warmachine/Hordes.  The NOVA Open is two months away and I still wanted to get in some practice for “Speedmachine”.  “Speedmachne” is 15 Point armies and played with 3:00 minute turns.  The 3:00 minute turns is really allowing me to learn my army better and play faster, I am hoping this faster play will rollover to when I play the larger 50 and 75 Point practice games.

First up during the day I played my son’s Cygnar army led by ‘Stryker 3’ and I played my Khador with ‘Vlad 1’.  I had a Unit on a scoring zone collecting points for me while the rest of my army was battling out, my son had nothing he could contest with until late in the game, by that time one of my ‘Juggernauts’ was able to Assassinate ‘Stryker 3’.  If I did not Assassinate ‘Stryker 3’, I would have one the game on Points that turn.

Later in the evening my Trollbloods friend TJ came out for a some practice games.  First up he played my Khador army and I was playing the same list as earlier in the day.  TJ elected to give ‘Borka 2’ a try.  This was a hard fought battle, ‘Borka 2’s’ Feat really dampened my plans, but I managed to stay in the game.  We battled it out all the way till the end of Turn 7 and I barely lost 2-1.

After my son played a game against TJ’s same list (and my son also lost), I played TJ again and he went with ‘Borka 1’ and a ‘Mountain King’.  I played the same list as earlier, but I swapped out ‘Vlad 1’ with ‘Butcher 1’.  We ended up going to Turn 4 and the score was 0-0 at this point.  TJ elected to charge into ‘Butcher 1’ and failed to hit on his Charge attack, ‘Butcher 1’ was camping 3 Focus and he managed to stay alive with 5 boxes.  ‘Butcher 1’ then popped his Feat and charge back at ‘Borka 1’, able to do so with his 2” reach and I was able to Assassinate ‘Borka 1’.  That was my first Assassination ever against TJ.

I am still undecided between playing ‘Vlad 1’ and ‘Butcher 1’, I still have 2 months to think about it before the NOVA Open.  I like ‘Vlad 1’ for his “Signs & Portents” spell, but ‘Butcher 1’ is a lot better in combat.

Besides getting in some gaming yesterday, I was also able to start on my ‘Kodiak’ Warjacks for my Khador army.  I need these two Warjacks for my 75 Point list for the NOVA Open Team Tournament.  I have only played with ‘Kodiak’s once before, so I know I will need a lot of practice with them.  I should be getting them done sometime later today or tomorrow.  More than likely they will be posted next week for the month of July.

Weekly Chronicle 2018 #15

Wow, this is the first week in 2018 that I did not get a model completed for the blog, that is what happens when real life gets in the way.  I have been busy remodeling a bathroom last week and that will continue on through this week.  I may have one model to show this week if time allows and that will be for the Batman Miniature Game.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I did make it out to a Steamroller event this past Saturday and get a couple of games in, so at least I did get some gaming in this past week.  I am also hoping to break away from some bathroom work Thursday night and get another game in (we’ll see as we get closer to Thursday).

Battle Report: Steamroller 4/14/2018 (Toledo, OH)

Yesterday my friend TJ and I took a drive out to Toledo Game Room in Toledo, OH (it was about a 3 hour drive for us) for a Warmachine/Hordes Steamroller event.  This was actually my first official Steamroller I ever played in, I played in events at conventions, but never a SR at a local store.

When we arrived to the store we were told to head all the way to back of the store.  WOW! It is a big store with multiple gaming rooms and an event space at the back of the store.

The event was a 2 list event but no DNC, so to save space in my bag I elected just to bring 1 list and that was my Khador.  As much as I love my Minions, I play Khador a little bit faster and I am always worried about the clock.  The reason behind just 1 list, I knew I would lose my first 2 games and be out for the day, so I decided just to learn and play the 1 list.

I had 2 very fun games and I hope my opponents did too.  Yes I brought a Colossal, but that was only to help me with the clock, less models for me, the faster I can play.

Game 1 vs Minions (Maelok 1) [Blake Hoppes]

Since I have been trying to learn my Minions better and playing with ‘Maelok’, it was nice to see how he can be played.  Even though I lost in Turn 4 via Control Points (5-0), I did not clock out and I only lost 1 model in ‘Kovnik Jozef’ and I was able to take out his ‘Blackhide Wrastler’ along with more than half of each of his ‘Posse’ Units.  It was close and I made some mistakes, should have concentrated a little bit more on the scenario and I could have been earning points with one of the flags on my side of the table.

Game 2 vs Khador (Vlad 1) [Bob Larson]

Bob was a “great” guy to play against and I had fun leaning about my Khador army.  He was running ‘Vlad 1’ and I learned how good Signs & Portents spell really is, I think I may have to try him soon myself.  Bob was running 3 ‘Juggernauts’ and 3 ‘Marauders’ along with 3 Min Units of ‘Winter Guard Rifle Corps’ with 3 ‘Rocketeers’ each.  The. Min Units of WGRC are typical for a tournament list and should be something that I play, I just do not have that many WGRC models yet.  I also lost this game 5-0 on Control Points and I still had a lot of time on my clock going into the bottom of Turn 3.  There was not much I could do to stop Bob from winning this Turn, but I had fun trying.  I cleaned up some of his WGRC and I ‘Butcher 1’ go into a Marauder and a Juggernaut and rip them apart on his Feat turn, it was cool.  Bob is from the eastern side of Michigan and I hope I run across him again at some future events.

That was my 2 losses for that day, TJ at this point was 1-1 and we both decided to make the drive back home stopping along the way for an early dinner and some shopping at a Cabela’s store since there is not once close to where I live.

Daily Chronicle: The Urge To Play X-Wing

I do not know why, but for some reason I have to urge to play X-Wing again.  It may be since I am fresh from coming back from AdeptiCon and I saw a lot of games being played there and the fact Fantasy Flight Games were selling a bunch of models, or the fact that they are pre-painted and easier to get them down on the gaming table.  I am leaning towards the latter.  I have already ruled out purchasing into the new Star Wars Legion (I do not not have the time to paint more miniatures) so than there is X-Wing.  I have not played a game in three years and all of our ships are still in Arizona, but I think when my son comes up it will have to be a game we try to rotate into the gaming schedule again.  I have no clue what the current ‘meta’ is and I am sure we are way behind in collecting ships, but we can at least play the game for fun with what we have.

More than likely, Warmachine/Hordes will be our defacto game that we play, then we will also rotate in Guild Ball, Batman Miniatures Game and if time allows, I think X-Wing.  Hopefully my son will also agree.

Daily Chronicle: Organizing The Mancave

I have two months until my oldest son moves up North and I thought today was a good time to re-organize the mancave and make some room for his gaming items.  Currently the closet in what will be his bedroom held all the family board games so those were going to have to come down into the basement, then my current miniature gaming shelves in the basement I was going to have to re-organize and make some more room.

Recently the chain store Target closed in our area and this past Thursday they held an online auction for items that were left behind.  I have never took part in one of these before but there were a few items I was interested in.  One of the items was a ‘Kellogg's Grab and Go’ shelf that I was able to win for $30.00.  I thought this shelf would be perfect to hold all my new in box gaming models that are yet to painted.

I brought the shelves home last night and started to clean them up and remove anything ‘kellogg’ related that I could.  Then this morning the real cleaning started.  First I had to build new shelves to hold the family board games, then I had to remove all the items on my gaming shelves and slide them over a bit so I could fit the the 5 shelf rack.

Now I think I ‘should’ have enough room to hopefully store what we bring up with him on the moved.  I know I have a few more army bags left in AZ that may come up and some more foam trays.  One half the board game shelves will probably be used for any gaming terrain.  My gaming table is right in the middle of the room and this will make it easier to set up the table.

Once cleaning was done it was time to get my AdeptiCon frame put together.  When I came back from SteamCon in December I thought it would be cool to frame some of the items I received.  I decided to do the same for AdeptiCon, I wish I would have thought of this idea years ago from when I first started going to cons.

Daily Chronicle: Broken Egg Games Warmachine/Hordes Token Sets

Well today is my birthday...Happy Birthday to me!

A few weeks ago after a Hordes games versus my friend where I prepared all my write on tokens before arriving to his house, only to realize when I got there the ink started to smear off while I was getting my army ready.  That’s when I thought I should go ahead and get some pre-prinited tokens.  For me it is a “catch 22”.  Pre-printed tokens eventually get changed and you need to buy updates, but the write on one’s get smeared off.

When I got home I started to look into two companies that I know that make very nice ones here in the US.  Muse on Minis and Broken Egg Games, both are really nice quality but Broken Egg Games are officially licensed by Privateer Press (and a few dollars more).  I actually had decided on purchasing the Muse on Minis tokens (they are officially licensed to make Guild Ball tokens and those are very nice) and I was going to get a Circle Orboros set for my son but while asking him if he already had a set, he had told me that he purchased the Broken Egg Games tokens   At that point he told me that he also purchased Minions, Trollbloods and Khador for me as a birthday present (he was going to surprise me with them at AdeptiCon but he did not want me to purchase my own sets).  Last weekend at AdeptiCon he brought them with him and they are gorgeous.  I first learned of the Broken Egg Games tokens at Lock & Load 2016, Adam (the owner of Broken Egg Games) showed my son and I the proof of concept on what the tokens would look like and they looked nice just on paper.

Now the problem I had is trying to get all my tokens organized.  There are just too many to fit in my current dice/token tray so I decided to break them up into baggies per Warcaster/Warlock the best I can.  When I came around to organizing Khador there were some spells that only came with one token, but their were multiple Warcaster who have that spell.  I decided for those to place the spell in the bag of the Warcaster I used the most.  By using the baggies, this will speed up a little time getting organized before the game starts and the leftover Solo/Unit tokens fit nicely into my tray.

Now all I need is the Minions 2018 update pack which I hope they release very soon.
