W40K: Re-basing Salamanders (Completed for AdeptiCon)

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I was needing to re-base 16 Salamander Space Marines for the AdeptiCon Warhammer 40K Team Tournament.  Well last night I was able to complete the remaining 5 and all 16 Space Marines re now completed.  I am going to have to do a future bulk order of bases so I can complete the rest of the Salamanders (then we still have 2 other Space Marine armies that could also use a re-basing).

At least these 16 are complete and it's time to move onto the last Unit of Imperial Fists for AdeptiCon.

W40K: Re-basing Salamanders

With the AdeptiCon Team Tournament approaching really quick, lots of items still need to get done.  Now that our friends from Indiana are joining us in the event, his son will be using on of our Space Marine armies in the Salamanders.

When my son and I started playing Warhammer 40K again a couple months back, I ordered some Litko 32mm clear acrylic bases to be glued under the existing 25mm bases (this works perfectly) but it does not match the rest of our armies being used for the Team Tournament.  Awhile back, Games Workshop changed most of the Space Marine Infantry bases from 25mm to 32mm, and when you are measuring distances from the base in this game, 7mm does make a difference.

So to have the Salamanders ready for AdeptiCon, I need to re-base 16 models, which is not a lot (but it is not all of my sons Salamanders, I will have to get to the rest after AdeptiCon).

As of this post, I have completed 11/16 and the remaining 5 should be completed sometime this week and then I can get back to my other projects.

In the picture below, the Space Marine Tactical Marine on the left has the 32mm Litko base, and on the right, one of the models re-based with GW 32mm.

W40K: Salamanders Razorback 3

[caption id="attachment_317" align="alignleft" width="64" caption="Salamanders"][/caption]

In saving some money and holding off on the Blood Angels some more, this past Monday I decided to expand my son's Salamander's army.  His 3rd Tactical Squad was still missing a transport, so I decided to pull down a Razorback from the closest shelf.  Started on the Razorback Monday morning and finished it on Tuesday.  This morning I applied the matte spray.  All three of his Razorbacks also have the options to become Rhino's if need be.

Top shelf is starting to get a bit thin now.  Hopefully soon I'll be able to do some more work on the Blood Angels.  Once we get back from vacation at the end of the month, I should be able to continue the Blood Angels and once they are completed I'll be concentrating on expanding the Imperial Guard and my son's Salamanders.

W40K: Salamanders Vulkan He'stan

[caption id="attachment_317" align="alignleft" width="64" caption="Salamanders"][/caption]

Vulkan He'stan, Forgefather of The Salamanders is the chosen of his Chapter and this past weekend I finally got around to painting him for my son's Salamanders army.  Since the Space Marines Codex first came out in late 2008 we have been using a converted Vulkan for his army.  A few months ago I had my local FLGS order me the new Vulkan He'stan model from Games Workshop.  I had the model sitting here in Arizona waiting for us to move back down.  Once we arrived back in April I picked up my model and assembled and primed the model.  Since April he has been just sitting on my painting desk just staring back at me.

Sunday morning I had decided it was time to actually paint up Vulkan.  I applied the base coats first thing in the morning (before and after the England/Germany World Cup match).  When we arrived back from our Apocalypse game later in the evening I applied some of the highlights and just before retiring for the night applied a few washes and finished up the base.  The matte spray was then applied first thing Monday morning.  Without further ado, I present Vulkan He'stan:

W40K: Salamanders Whirlwind 1

Games Workshop©
I had a Space Marine Whirlwind lying on my shelf and I thought I'd add it to my son's Salamander army.  I was not going to use it in my Ultramarines or Blood Angels (and my Black Templars cannot use them), so why not, add some more arsenal for my son.  One thing about my son's Salamander army is that this is his army to grow with.  When a cool model comes out or wants to try something different, it will be for this army.

The Whirlwind I had was already assembled, so I threw on some paint last night and finished up the highlights this morning.  Matte spray just finished drying, so here's the picture.

W40K: Salamanders Vindicator 1

Games Workshop©
For a change from painting my Tyranids, I decided to take a model off my shelf and add a unit to my son's Salamander army.  I had 2 Vindicators sitting up there, so I decided to bring one down.

My son's Salamander army is obviously themed around Vulkan with all the twin linked flamers and meltas.  This Salamander army is also his Space Marine army that we will always expand on.  So whenever he wants to buy or try a new unit, it will be for this army.

Anyway, getting back to the Vindicator,  I woke up early on Saturday morning (to finish the Zoanthropes) and to start assembly on this tank.  I managed to complete the tank in a few hours, and then when I arrived back home from errands I sprayed on the primer.  First thing this morning, the painting commenced on the tank, and just a little while ago, the matte spray was placed.

W40K: Salamanders Update 4/25/2009

I was able to finish Tactical Squad 3 this week for the Salamanders and my son and I threw down for a practice game last night at the Chicago Battle Bunker. I have around 1250 pts of the Salamanders now completed, and I added a primed Land Raider Crusader to his list for a 1500 pt game. I decided to throw down with my Black Templars. I've been playing them a lot lately and I'm getting pretty comfortable on how they play.

The Mission was Seize Ground (4 objectives) and the deployment was Pitched Battle. My son got high die so he choose to go second. I got to pick my table edge and deploy first.

The game lasted 6 turns and all I can say is WOW! I made some pretty bad errors in judgement and should have done a lot differently. The Salamanders just about tabled the Black Templars except for 1 Tactical Squad I had left and he captured 3 out of the 4 objectives and only 1" away from capturing the 4th.

It was a good game, and I hope enjoyed playing with his Salamanders. The Land Raider Crusader really helped him a lot in this game.

I think for the time being I will be make a slight change for his 1750 pt list. Originally it was going to have 4 Tactical Squads with 4 Razorbacks. I think I am going to keep 3 Tactical Squads with 2 Razorbacks and then throw in the Crusader. So at 1750 points he'll have the following:

1750 Points:
1 Vulkan
3 Troop Squads
2 Razorbacks
2 Dreadnoughts
1 Squad of Terminators
1 Land Raider Redeemer
1 Land Raider Crusader

This will be I think more fun for him to play with. I'll eventually add the 4th Troop Squad and 2 Razorbacks and then this will round out the list nicely at 2000 points.

I'm looking forward to a rematch..... but I think I'll have to bring out my Dark Angels with all my Lascannons or even my Dark Eldar with Bright Lances....

Ok, onto painting the Crusader.

W40K: Salamanders Update 4/10/2009

A week before AdeptiCon I decided to start on my sons W40K Space Marines Salamanders Chapter. He started buying the models just before Christmas, so I thought it was finally time to get them painted. I plan to paint these in phases, and hopefully get them all completed by the end of April. Only 3 weeks left.

1000 Points:
1 Captain (primed)
2 Troop Squads (completed)
2 Razorbacks (completed)
2 Dreadnoughts (completed)
1 Squad of Terminators (primed)

So thats where I stand as of now. I hope to have the Terminators and Captain done by this weekend so we can start playing some 1000 point games next week.

For the next phase, he purchased a Land Raider Redeemer.
1250 Points
1 Land Raider Redeemer

At 1500 points, we plan on adding the following.
1 Vulkan (replacing Captain)
1 Troop Squad (minus Razorback)

At 1750 points, we plan on adding the following.
1 Razorback to Troop Squad
1 Troop Squad w/ Razorback

So at 1750 points, he'll have the following:

1750 Points:
1 Vulkan
4 Troop Squads
4 Razorbacks
2 Dreadnoughts
1 Squad of Terminators
1 Land Raider Redeemer

We'll see how we expand it after that.
