Daily Chronicle: "DraganCon I" Saturday 3/28/2020 Recap

Day 2 of "DraganCon I" was yesterday, Saturday March 28th and we veered a little bit from our original schedule.  On ur schedule was suppose to be a 2000 point game of Warhammer 40,000 followed by a 1000 point.  We ended up starting the day with the 1000 point and ran a bit longer than expected (since we were watching the Games Workshop Preview show) that instead of doing a 2000 point game afterwards, we played a game of X-Wing instead later in the evening.

Our first game of of the day was Warhammer 40,000, 1000 point of Astra Militarium (Imperial Guard) vs Salamanders (Space Marines).  It has been a long time since I broke out my Imperial Guard and was kind of nice seeing them on the table again.  We played the mission "Front Line Warfare" from Chapter Approved 2019 with a "Search and Destroy" deployment zones.

My Imperial Guard were not hitting as good as what my Imperial Fists usually do (hitting n 4+), but I think the shear number of models overwhelmed the Salamanders.  'Vulkan' and a unit of 'Terminators' were really the only threat my IG had and it was big threat.  They came smashing through my right flank but it was a bit too late for them and I was securing a lead with Victory Points.  The end result was a 17-7 win for the Imperial Guard after Round 5.

Once we put these armies away, like I mentioned above it was getting late already.  We decided to get the table ready for X-Wing and start playing once dinner was done.

We both decided to build a new Hyperspace list (we kind of had too since all of our old lists have changed) and Hyperspace seems to be the go to norm now for tournament games (Hyperspace cycles through available cards you can use throughout the year).

I played a Scum list with Boba Fett, Fenn Rau and a Zealous Recruit while my son played the Rebel Alliance with Luke (of course), Han and a Blue Squadron Escort.  This was a close battle bit not having any shields on Fenn and the Zealous Recruit really hurt especially when their abilities kick in when they are in their opponents faces.  Boba Fett held his own and almost finished of Han Solo (but left him with 2) and the Scum lost to the Rebels 86-314.

For Sunday we are hoping for 2 games of Warhammer 40,000..... for sure we are getting in 1.

Battle Report: X-Wing 3/23/2019 (AdeptiCon Practice)

Yesterday my son and I played 2 games of X-Wing to get a little more practice for the X-Wing System Open Qualifier at AdeptiCon next Friday.  My son will not be playing in X-Wing (but instead Batman) but he still got in a few games for my much needed practice.

Last time I played a couple weeks back, I was testing a "Fat Han" list with just Han Solo and Wedge, a 2 ship list (Hyperspace legal), but since the AdeptiCon event is a System Open Qualifier and is an Extended Format event, I decided to change a few things up by putting Han on a diet and squeezing in a Bandit Squadron Pilot Z-95 ship.

Game 1:

My List:
Han Wedge Bandit v1.0

(82) Han Solo [Modified YT-1300 Light Freighter]
(5) Nien Nunb
(8) Perceptive Copilot
(6) Veteran Turret Gunner
(5) Lone Wolf
(6) Millennium Falcon
Points: 112

(52) Wedge Antilles [T-65 X-wing]
(2) R4 Astromech
(0) Servomotor S-foils
(5) Hull Upgrade
(6) Outmaneuver
Points: 65

(23) Bandit Squadron Pilot [Z-95-AF4 Headhunter]
Points: 23

Total points: 200

My Son:
Luke Wedge Norra

(62) Luke Skywalker [T-65 X-wing]
(2) R4 Astromech
(0) Servomotor S-foils
(12) Proton Torpedoes
(2) Instinctive Aim
Points: 78

(52) Wedge Antilles [T-65 X-wing]
(6) Outmaneuver
(2) R4 Astromech
(0) Servomotor S-foils
Points: 60

(55) Norra Wexley [ARC-170 Starfighter]
(4) Veteran Tail Gunner
(2) Predator
Points: 61

Total points: 199

I learn to fly the YT-1300 a little better than last time and managed to keep the ship on the mat.  My Rebel list was able to destroy all of my son's Rebel ships for the victory.  I did manage to lose my T-65 and my Z-95 in this but the YT-1300 was still flying.

Game 2:

In this Game, I played again with my same list, and my son changed his up a bit by dropping the ARC-170 and adding another T-65 with Biggs.  The 3 Rebel T-65's managed to bring down Han in this game, but my Wedge and my Bandit Squadron Pilot were able to finish them off with the Bandit Pilot getting 2 direct hits to finish off Luke Skywalker.

Battle Report: X-Wing 3/9/2019 (Rebels vs Empire)

Yesterday morning  I was able to get in another practice game with my "Fat Han" list against my son (though it turned out it was not much practice with the Falcon).  I asked my son if he could fly a Tie list so I could see how well my 2 ship list would hold up against multiple ships.

I made a slight change to my list from my last game, dropping R2-D2 for Perceptive Copilot.

My "Fat Han" List v1.1:

Modified YT-1300 Light Freighter - •Han Solo - 132
Han Solo - Scoundrel for Hire (82)
Lone Wolf (5)
Nien Nunb (5)
Perceptive Copilot (8)
Millennium Falconn(6)
Luke Skywalker (26)

T-65 X-wing - •Wedge Antilles - 66
Wedge Antilles - Red Two (52)
Outmaneuver (6)
R4 Astromech (2)
Shield Upgrade (6)
Servomotor S-foils (Closed) (0)

Total: 198/200

Son's Empire List:

TIE/ln Fighter - Academy Pilot - 23
Academy Pilot (23)

TIE/ln Fighter - Academy Pilot - 23
Academy Pilot (23)

TIE/ln Fighter - Academy Pilot - 23
Academy Pilot (23)

TIE/ln Fighter - Academy Pilot - 23
Academy Pilot (23)

TIE/ln Fighter - Academy Pilot - 23
Academy Pilot (23)

TIE Advanced x1 - •Darth Vader - 85
Darth Vader - Black Leader (65)
Collision Detector (6)
Cluster Missiles (5)
Hull Upgrade (7)
Instinctive Aim (2)

Total: 200/200

Well the game was going really good through the first 3 Turns of the game, Wedge had taken out a Tie, so did Han, but then I got the Falcon stuck too close to the edge of the board with no place to go.  Turn 4, the Falcon flew off the board and it was all up to Wedge.

I tried to bounce back the best i could and Wedge was rolling some hot dice to Evade, but when the clock had expired, it was Wedge vs Vader and Vader just got the Hull of the X-Wing below half.

Empire won 165-115 (MOV: 250-150)

It has been too long since flying large based ships (I was getting used to the medium of Boba Fett), but If I did not fly off the board, I think the outcome would have been different.

I still like this list a lot, I need to decide soon which I want to play for AdeptiCon (but I am still leaning towards this one).

Battle Report: X-Wing 3/2/2019 (Rebels vs Rebels)

WOW, this is actually post #1000 dating all the way back to 2009!

It has been awhile since I last played X-Wing, and I really need more practice before AdeptiCon comes up on us in a few weeks, not that I am going to get in a win at AdeptiCon, but it would be nice to fly my ships knowing the rules.

This morning I woke up my son early (early for him) and we got in a game of X-Wing in before he left for work.  I have been basically flying 'Scum & Villainy' since the release of X-Wing 2.0 (and I really do like Boba Fett), but I decided to go try a "Fat Han" list and see how I like it.  I used to like flying a "Fat Han" back in X-Wing 1.0, or a double YT-1300 lists, but the norm in X-Wing 2.0 has been to fly 3+ ships, well let's see how this new "Fat Han" list works.

My "Fat Han" List:

Modified YT-1300 Light Freighter - •Han Solo - 132
Han Solo - Scoundrel for Hire (82)
Lone Wolf (5)
Nien Nunb (5)
R2-D2 (8)
Millennium Falconn(6)
Luke Skywalker (26)

T-65 X-wing - •Wedge Antilles - 66
Wedge Antilles - Red Two (52)
Outmaneuver (6)
R4 Astromech (2)
Shield Upgrade (6)
Servomotor S-foils (Closed) (0)

Total: 198/200

Son's Rebel List:

T-65 X-wing - Blue Squadron Escort - 41
Blue Squadron Escort -  (41)
Servomotor S-foils (Open) (0)

T-65 X-wing - Blue Squadron Escort - 41
Blue Squadron Escort - (41)
Servomotor S-foils (Open) (0)

Z-95-AF4 Headhunter - •Lieutenant Blount - 36
Lieutenant Blount - Team Player (30)
Marksmanship (1)
Cluster Missiles (5)

T-65 X-wing - •Luke Skywalker - 82
Luke Skywalker - Red Five (62)
Proton Torpedoes (12)
R2-D2 (6)
Instinctive Aim (2)
Servomotor S-foils (Open) (0)

Total: 200/200

The game played the way I wanted it, I was able to attract my sons Rebel ships to go after wedge while Han was able to come up the flank.

The enemy Rebels were able to get Wedge down to 1 Hull Point left and Wedge was about to kick in the afterburners and fly and leave it up to Han, but at the last moment Han spoke to Wedge and told him to get back into fight and Wedge did a sharp right turn about and placed his ship perfectly behind 3 of the enemy ships.  Han and Wedge were now able to whittle down the enemy Rebels.  All that was left was to destroy Luke Skywalker.  Wedge took his shots from the rear, and Han finished him off from the front for the win.

Battle Report: X-Wing 11/30/2018 (Scum vs Rebels)

It has been a few weeks since my last game of X-Wing and last night my son and I played so we can keep the rules fresh in our minds.  I am signed up for the X-Wing System Open Qualifier at AdeptiCon 2019, not that I am gong to win, but I do want to make sure I know what I am doing.  For last nights game, I went back to playing Scum & Villiany and my son with his Rebels.

*upgrades not listed
Rebel (200)
Wedge Antilles
Luke Skywalker
B-Wing Variant?

Scum & Villiany (200)
Boba Fett
Talonbane Cobra
Graz

I flew Cobra and Graz in a perfect position to get a Range 1 shot on Luke early in the game and they both whiffed allowing Luke to continue flying, he should have been destroyed early on.  Wedge and the B-Wing then made work on Graz, he survived the first round of shooting, but then the next round he was destroyed.  My remaining 2 ships then start to finally hit their targets....B-Wing ad Wedge were destroyed and now it was time for Luke to use the Force and pull off the win....was not going to happen.  Boba Fett made a hell of a rear shot on Luke to win the game.

Battle Report: X-Wing 10/21/2018 (Rebels vs Rebels)

This afternoon before my son had to go in to work, we were able to get in a game of X-Wing.  All of X-Wing 2.0 I have been flying with the Scum, but today I wanted to change it up a bit and try a Rebel fleet.  I came across the list used to win the Michigan GT last weekend, so I thought I would give it a try.

*upgrades not listed
Rebel (A) (199) (me)
Wedge Antilles
Jan Ors
"Dutch" Vander
Blue Squadron Escort

Rebel (B) (197) (my son)
Wedge Antilles
Blue Squadron Escort
Blue Squadron Escort
Bandit Squadron Pilot

 Rebel (A)

Rebel (B)

I really do like the list alot, but it just was not the day for me.  My 'Wedge' was knocked out first and then I retaliated and killed his 'Wedge'.  Next 'Jan Ors' got killed and I was down 4 ships to 2.  I could not come back and clock ran out on us.  Rebels (A) killed 134 points, Rebels (B) killed 179.  Scoring per the tournament packet would give my son 245 points to my 155.

I could use more practice with the above list, but I really enjoy flying my Scum.

Battle Report: X-Wing 9/21/2018 (Scum vs Rebels)

Last night we got in another game of X-Wing 2.0, this time a full 200 points vs 200 points.  We were still a bit slow on time (much slower than the 75 minutes allowed in a tournament game), but we are still learning 2.0 and some of the new symbols on the cards.

Since I just opened 'Lando's Millennium Falcon' expansion pack, I thought it would be fun giving it a fly.  Han Solo and Boba Fett flying siide by side with an escape pod.  Since I am still fresh on 2.0 and all the upgrade cards, I based their upgrades on the quick build lists that Fantasy Flight Games offers on their website (and in the new 2.0 packaging).

Customized YT-1300 Light Freighter - Han Solo - 71
    •Han Solo - The Corellian Kid (54)
        Marksmanship (1)
        Chewbacca (4)
        Rigged Cargo Chute (4)
        Tactical Scrambler (2)
        Lando’s Millennium Falcon (6)

Firespray-class Patrol Craft - Boba Fett - 103
    •Boba Fett - Notorious Bounty Hunter (80)
        Lone Wolf (4)
        Perceptive Copilot (10)
        Seismic Charges (3)
        Inertial Dampeners (1)
        Slave I (5)

Escape Craft - Outer Rim Pioneer - 26
    •Outer Rim Pioneer - Skillful Outlaw (24)
        Tobias Beckett (2)

Total: 200/200

My son was flying the Rebel Alliance led by Luke Skywalker in a T-65, 2 additional T-65's and an A-Wing.

As I mentioned above, I am still getting a hang of the new Action symbols, but I am liking what I am seeing so far, Boba Fett was really fun to fly (I had more fun with him than the Millennium Falcon) and he seemed to have done most of the work.

Both of my ships survived and the Scum and Villainy won the battle, but Han Solo was down to his last Hull point and Boba Fett has lost all his Shields.

I started my first two Turns with Boba Fett Reinforcing his Hull and eliminating the Stress by doing so.  The Reinforced Hull really helped his ship a lot and I need to try that tactic again next time.

It came down to the Rebels just having Luke Skywalker left, and Boba Fett had a rear shot that was able to finish him off.

Really fun time with Boba Fett and I am hoping to try him soon with a couple more smaller ships.

I realized after Deployment, I should have placed Boba Fett on the outside to take advantage of Tactical Scrambler on Han Solo.

Escape Pod launches from the Millennium Falcon.

Han Solo weakens Luke Skywalker and Boba Fett takes the kill shot.

Battle Report: X-Wing 9/20/2018

Last night my son and I finally got in a couple of games of X-Wing 2.0.  Just to begin with and refresh my memory on how the game plays (since it has been over 3 years since I played X-Wing) we elected to just start of playing with the Starter Sets.  My son was flying the Rebels with a T-65 X-Wing and I was playing the Galactic Empire with 2 Tie Fighters.

Game 1 Deployment.

It was actually really fun playing again, our first game (as with all new games) we had our heads buried a lot in the rules manual, it was more of me forgetting on how things worked.  I spaced out my 2 Tie Fighters in deployment to try and draw the X-Wing towards one of them while I flanked with the other. In this game, the X-wing managed to destroy 1 Tie Fighter and the second Tie Fighter finished off the X-Wing.  A win for the Galactic Empire.

Lone Tie Fighter destroys X-Wing,

In game 2 I deployed both of my Tie Fighters next to each other (no pic, just to try something different).  This game moved along much faster as we did not have to reference the rules manual as much.  It was another win for the Galactic Empire as I still had both of my Tie Fighters still flying.

In these two beginner games, not much of the 2.0 rules were actually used, I did do some Barrel Rolls just to see how they work now.  We still to get some more games in with adding more of the 2.0 rules into the game.  I am hoping this weekend to give it another try, a few more games played and then we can start adding in the game timer.

Battle Report: X-Wing 2/13/2015

My long vacation (drive to Florida and back) is over and it is time to get some gaming back in. It has been quite awhile since I played, so this weekend I got in a game of X-Wing and Warhammer 40K.

First we start with X-Wing on Friday night. 'Dark Knight' played in a Store Championship last weekend at Desert Sky Games and was able to get 5 games in and some practice and it showed off.

Game: Dogfight
Points: 100

'Han &Chewy' [100] (Arrow)
Han Solo (YT-1300) [54]
[Marsmanship, Gunner]
Chewbacca (YT-1300) [46]
[Push The Limit, Millennium Falcom]

'XXXZZZ' [99] (Dark Knight)
Rookie Pilot (X-Wing) [21]
Rookie Pilot (X-Wing) [21]
Rookie Pilot (X-Wing) [21]
Bandit Squadron Pilot (Z-Wing) [12]
Bandit Squadron Pilot (Z-Wing) [12]
Bandit Squadron Pilot (Z-Wing) [12]

Let's just say that when you have 6 ships shooting at you, your bound to crash & burn. The 2 YT-1300's could not shake off all the shots from the X's and Z's. Han & Chewy did manage to take down all 3 Z-Wings's, but the X-Wings then finished off Han Solo just as time was about to expire.

'Dark Knight' got the Match Win.

I think this would be a good list for 'Dark Knight' to try in the next Store Championships. I may have to try and come up with some type of Rebel swarm list to also play. All the fire power is tough to deal with.

Battle Report: X-Wing 1/10/2015

With the 'Store Championship' season quickly approaching for X-Wing, 'Dark Knight' and I got in another 100 point game in yesterday afternoon.  I wanted to test out a Rebel list that I played once before and wanted to see how it did again.  I know we will more than likely be attending one of the store championships (probably at Empire Games on 3/14/2015) and I may be able to attend at least one more.  My son more than likely will also be attending at least 2-3 himself.

Game: Dogfight
Points: 100

'Wes, Wedge, Luke' [100] (Arrow)
Wes Janson (X-Wing) [30]
[Veteran Instincts]
Wedge Antilles (X-Wing) [33]
[Opportunist]
Luke Skywalker (X-Wing) [37]
[RD-D2, Draw Their Fire, Shield Upgrade]

'Han Shoots First' [99] (Dark Knight)
Han Solo (YT-1300) [57]
[Millennium Falcon, Marksmanship, Gunner, Dash Rendar]
Rookie Pilot (X-Wing) [21]
Rookie Pilot (X-Wing) [21]

All I can is that I missed flying without a large ship and all the Shields/Hull.  I decided to take a little bit more aggresive approach and go right after the Rookie Pilots.  That was a mistake and I should have concentrated my fire power on Han Solo first.  I did not realize how easily Han was taking damage once I started firing at him, but by the I was already down an X-Wing.

"Arrow's" Starting Fleet

"Dark Knight's" Starting Fleet

Wes, Wedge, Luke concentrate on a Rookie Pilot.

Rookie Pilot #2 shoots down Wes.

With Han's help, Rookie Pilot #2 finishes Luke.

Han takes a close shot at Wedge and destroys him.

With Wedge being the same PS as Han, Wedge
Fires back at Han and brings down the Falcon.

'Dark Knight' got is first win of 2015.

The Rookie PIlot #2 was the last ship flying and the MVP of the game.

Now it will be time to playtest another list (probably with a large ship in it).

Battle Report: 1/3/2015 X-Wing

My son (Dark Knight) and I (Arrow) played our first game of X-Wing for 2015 last night and it was brutal for the Galactic Empire.

I wanted to try out a new version for me of a 'Han Shoots First' list, and my son elected to play with the Empire.  I was shocked, he always plays the Rebels and this was only his second time with the Empire.

Game: Dogfight
Points: 100

'Han Shoots First XY' [100] (Arrow)
Han Solo (YT-1300) [62]
[Millennium Falcon, Engine Upgrade, Veteran Instincts, C-3PO, Luke Skywalker]
Biggs Darklighter (X-Wing) [25]
Tala Squadron Pilot (Z-95) [13]

'Vaders Squad' [100] (Dark Knight)
Darth Vader (TIE Advanced) [33]
[Expose]
Dark Curse (TIE Fighter) [16]
Winged Gundark (TIE Fighter) [15]
Alpha Squadron Pilot (TIE Interceptor) [18]
Alpha Squadron Pilot (TIE Intereptor) [18]

Just about all of the asteroids were in the center of the battlefield, so my plan of attack was to sweep around my left side edge and hit the Empire from behind.  Well the Empire just about had the same plan for themselves, lucky for me Darth Vader had some bad flying skills which casued him to land on top of two asteroids eliminating his chance of any shots against Han.  The Rebels took advantage of this and Han got some early shots into Vader and lowered his shield.  Tala put in a few shots on Vader and eventually Han finshed Vader off.

One of the Empire's TIE Fighter was strong enough to bring down Biggs Darklighter, but Tala then returned fire and shot down the TIE Fighter.  Rest of the Empire fleet then made easy work of Tala and now they had to attempt to bring down Han.

This was not happening and Han easily brought down the rest of the ships.

Rebel Win

A huge mistake with Vaders flying cost 'Dark Knight' the game.  I think Vader needed to fly with 2 of the TIE Interceptors and concentrate on Han (and avoiding asteroids), the the TIE Fighters on the X-Wing and Z-95.

Obviously I had fun because I won, hopefully 'Dark Knight' did to.  It's just a game and I'm glad to see he changed it up and played the Empire instead of the Rebels.  Part of the fun of this game is getting to play with all the different ships.

Rebel Fleet

Empire Fleet

Han lowers the shields on Vader.

Han fires to his backside to finish Darth Vader.

Biggs goes down to the Empire.

Tala returns fire on the TIE Fighter.

Han up close and personal to finish a TIE Interceptor.

Long range shot and brings down a TIE Fighter.

TIE Interceptor flanks Tala for the killshot.

Han with the final blow.
