Hordes: Trollbloods Skaldi Bonehammer (Unit)

With AdeptiCon 2018 being last weekend, I did not have any time to prep/build many models to paint for this week.  I still had one ready to go and that is ‘Skaldi Bonehammer’.  ‘Skaldi Bonehammer’ is a Command Attachment for the ‘Trollkin Champions’.  One of the main benefits ‘Skaldi’ provides to the ‘Trollkin Champions’ is he grants Pathfinder to the entire Unit.  With how terrain is placed with SR2017 (and I am sure it will be the same in SR2018), there is a lot more terrain now towards the center of the board.  Pathfinder will not hinder the Units movement through terrain.

With the end of my Painting Quarter coming to an end on Saturday, I am not sure if anything else will be done this week.  I need to look at my Painting Queue and re-priortize my models with everything that I just purchase last weekend and from what my son brought up with him.  There are a few Minion models that may have to priority over my Trollbloods so I can be sure they are done in time for the NOVA Open and the end of August.

Hordes: Trollbloods Hoarluk Doomshaper, Rage of Dhunia (Warlock)

‘Hoarluk Doomshaper, Rage of Dhunia’ or better know as ‘Doomshaper 2’ is my first Warlock completed in my green theme and only my second Warlock for my Trollbloods army.  You can click on the “Armies” tab above and few all my completed models.  Originally when I bought the ‘Doomshaper’ Warlocks back in MkII, they were known to run with the ‘Glacier Kings’, though in MkIII that slightly changed, but the ‘Doomshapers’ are still good to run with Warbeast heavy lists, and that is the playstyle I am looking for with the Trollbloods.  Warbeasts in ‘Doomshapers 2’ gain FIELD MARSHALL [OVERTAKE] plus he has quite a few spells geared toward his Warbeasts like PRIMAL SHOCK along with his FEAT: SCROLL OF GRIMMR.

I also have the ‘Doomshaper 1’ and ‘Doomshaper 3’ models that will eventually need to be painted, but I am looking at possibly purchasing/painting ‘Madrak 1’ before that so I can also have an infantry Warlock.

Hordes: Trollbloods Pyre Troll (Warbeast)

I enjoy painting Warbeasts, maybe with me getting up in age, they are easier to see.  I had this model the ‘Pyre Troll’ sitting in my bin of Trollblood models and just decided to open him and get him painted.  I believe I know only have one unpainted Warbeast left and that one is suppose to be in my blue scheme, but we’ll see, maybe he’ll be green also.  I know when my sone visits in a few days for AdeptiCon, he will be bringing me the Warbest ‘Rok’ so that one will keep me busy for a bit, and then I will have to get to painting some Units, though there will be a few items I will need to get to for my Minions army.  Like I mentioned yesterday, after AdeptiCon I’ll have to re-prioritize my queue a little bit.

This the second model I am posting with a different camera setting that I used for the lat year, so far I am liking it.  I amy look for a better back drop at AdeptiCon on Thursday.

Hordes: Trollbloods Stone Scribe Elder (Command Attachment)

I have one more Trollblood model for the week, and today it is a ‘Stone Sribe Elder’.  The ‘Stone Scribe Elder’ is a Command Attachment model who is used with a Unit of ‘Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes’.  Each turn the ‘Stone Scribe Elder’ can use one of three effects that can benefit your army.  The one that I am liking is called STONE STRENGTH which is while within the Protective Aura, friendly Faction models gain +1 STR.

Since I am counting down the days...only 6 more days till AdeptiCon...

Hordes: Trollbloods Troll Axer (Warbeast)

A Light Warbeast that currently costs 10 points that can pack a punch and here we have ‘Troll Axer’.  ‘Troll Axer’ is a MAT 6, DEF 12, ARM 17 Light Warbeast who has a RNG 2, P+S 14 Great Axe.  ‘Troll Axers’ Great Axe also has THRESHER which allows him to make one melee attack against each model in its LOS.  This is very helpful where he can go and charge in on some light infantry and easily clearing out 2-4 models with his threat range.  ‘Troll Axer’ is a nice addon for the points cost.

I am really happy with how this model turned out and looks good in my new green theme.

Hordes: Trollbloods Mulg the Ancient (Warbeast)

Back to a little painting with my Hordes Trollbloods army.  I am working my way down a ‘Doomshaper 2’ list that I will like to try out in the “Storm of the North” Theme and it is very Warbeast heavy (actually I currently have 3 lists for this Warlock and all are Warbeast heavy).

Up next we have ‘Mulg the Ancient’ which is almost a given when running with a ‘Doomshaper’ variant.  ‘Mulg’ has BOND [DOOMSHAPER] which means if he begins the game in ‘Doomshapers’ battlegroup, he gains +1 FURY.

‘Mulg’ looks to be a really good beatstick Warbeast with 2 P+S 19 attacks with a RNG 2 and 1 P+S 17 attack with a RNG 1.  His DEF is 10 and ARM 19, real similiar to my Khador Warjacks.  I am looking forward to getting this guy on the battlefield.

I am still unsure if I like the “rock” style I am doing with my Trollbloods.  Most people paint their rocks with a hard edge highlight (and I do like that effect), but I elected to go with a smoother edge of brown.  In the pics it is hard to see the brown shades.

Hordes: Trollbloods Earthborn Dire Troll (Warbeast)

I have another Hordes model completed this week for Trollbloods and it is another Warbeast painted in my new green scheme.  Today I present the ‘Earthborn Dire Troll’.

I do have to figure out a better way to photos though.  Currently for the longest time I have just been using my phone (because it is faster and the photo then is already on my ipad to add to my blogging app), I may have to try and use a regular digital camera again sometime in the future and and see if it looks a bit better.  I will also have to look for a place where I can set my lightbox, I stopped using it becasue I was not fond of the crease in backdrop, this year at AdeptiCon I may have to break down and get one of the neoprene backdrops I saw last year.

Hordes: Trollbloods Dire Troll Mauler (Warbeast)

As I mentioned a few days ago, now that my models are completed for AdeptiCon, it is time to have some fun/enjoyment painting some models stress free.  I posted on Tuesday my new ‘Troll Whelps’ in a “green” color scheme and now I am continuing that on with a Warbeast ‘Dire Troll Mauler’.  I am really liking how this color scheme is turning out so far and it is much easier for me to paint than the blues.

Hordes: Trollbloods Troll Whelps 2 (Solo)

Well we are 5 days into March and it about time I get some Trollbloods posted for the month.  I have been slowly collecting Trollbloods for about 7 years (a little bit at a time), and about 2 years ago I had decided to paint up a few them.  I have always liked the “blue” theme of the models, but they did not fit my style of painting.  I did get quite a few of them done in “blue” and then the project took the back burner to my Minions (which I enjoyed painting).

A few weeks ago I was driving home from Kalamazoo after a game againt my friend’ Trollbloods with my Minions and I was thinking, “what if I painted my Trollbloods like I do my Minions, in green”.  Once that popped into my head I could not stop thinking about them.  Personally for me I feel like my Minions look pretty decent on a table top, so the Trollbloods should also and I can get them painted pretty quickly also.

2 years ago I started to test my “blue” theme on some Troll Whelps , (although my “blue” style slightly changed through testing some models) I decided to do the same with my “green” theme.

I am still pretty bad at photography, but the new “green” does look pretty cool in person.  I am really happy how they are coming out.  Now I just need to decide if it looks bad to mix-n-match my “blue” and “green” occasionally....cousins!

Hordes: Trollbloods Weekend Prep Work 3/4/2018

Now that we are into March and I am all ready for AdeptiCon 2018 at the end of this month, it it now time to start the prep work on some Hordes Trollbloods and see if I like the new color scheme I have chosen.

I have 4 Warbeasts getting prepped, ‘Dire Troll Mauler’, ‘Earthborn Dire Troll’, ‘Mulg the Ancient’ and a ‘Troll Axer’.  I also have a Solo I am working on, a ‘Stone Scribe Eldar’, a Unit Attachment with ‘Skaldi Bonehammer’ (pic below) and finally a Warlock with ‘Hoarluk Doomshaper, Rage of Dhunia’ (also in pic below).

After those are completed I also have a couple of Units I need to get to, ‘Trollkin Champions’ and ‘Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes’, but the Units probably will not be hitting the table till the end of the month.

Time to paint.

Hordes: Trollbloods Back On The Table

It has been 2 years since I painted my last Trollbloods Solo and 2-1/2 years since my last Warbeast.  I have always like the models of the Trollbloods, but painting the blue for me was very time consuming and I could not get it quite the way I liked it.  I only like to play with painted models so most of my work is aimed at ‘table top quality’, I do spend some extra time on characters, but if it looks good to me then I am happy.

As you can see if you read this blog, lately most of my models have been the Minions (which I do like more than Trollbloods), but I can coming close to the finish line on having all of them done and I am always looking for more models to add to my painting queue.  There is still a few Solos and such I still need to add to my Minions and if I want to duplicate more Warbeasts, but it’s time to maybe dig out the Trollbloods again.

The other day while driving home from a game againsy my friend (who played Trollbloods), I got to thinking about my Trollbloods and “what if I paint them in my Minions scheme”, it paints much faster than the blue scheme I am currently using.  I am still going to keep the blue ones that are finished blue and run them together in a list, but I think the Minions scheme will look pretty good on them and I can get them completed a bit faster.

So on Friday I dug out all my Trollbloods models that I currently have unpainted and painted and made out a list.

I really did not realize that I owned that many models, especially unpainted ones.  Looks like I have enough to keep me busy for awhile.  After researching some current Trollbloods lists that I can utilize my models with, I did come up a few short and had to put in an order with my son back in Arizona.

I know I need to start working on my ‘Winterguard Rifle Corp’, but I am getting the itch to try out a model in the new scheme.

Stay tuned........

Hordes: Trollbloods Janissa Stonetide (Solo)

Picked up Janissa Stonetide from a friend last weekend who was selling off some of his models. I had this model on my list of models needed for my Doomie 1 list and while I was at Lock & Load, I forgot to pick it up. Glad he was selling her and I picked her up for $6. She had a little paint on her so I did a quick re-prime and threw on my colors. Nothing fancy, just quick and fast.

Hordes: Trollbloods Dire Troll Blitzer (Warbeast)

Two months since a model hit this blog, that's pretty bad. But when you have as many hobbies as I do you need to priortize (plus lately I have been pretty lazy, my mind has been concentrating on house hunting out of state). Since Privateer Press's 'Lock & Load' is next weekend (and my son and I are leaving Wednesday) I thought it was time to get a model completed.

My Classic Dire Troll Blitzer has been sitting half painted on my table for over a month. Last night I decided "what the hell" and let's just slap on some colors and call him done. So not much effort really went into this guy, just wanted him done. All honestly not a fan of the 'classic' sculpt that much either, I prefer the new sculpt much better.

At least I can try him out in some 'Claw & Fang' battles next weekend with my son.

Hordes: Trollbloods Dire Troll Bomber (Warbeast)

Well the batteries in the painting machine seem to have faded in the month of March, but during the last week of the month I was able to get my Trollbloods Dire Troll Bomber on the painting table.

I did not get him finished in March, but he will be the first model for April. I was able to get him completed this past Friday night.

Still working on my Trollbloods skin tone technique and I really happy on this guy came out. I think between Gunnbjorn and now Bomber, I am finally happy on my skin tones.

On a sad note, our LGS of 8 years (Empire Games) has officially closed it's doors yesterday. Gaming table wise (20+), I personally feel this was the best gaming store here in Phoenix. Odyssey Games in Scottsdale recently opened and is also a very nice store and I have played there before with my son, but the store is about 25 miles away. The other stores that are now closer to me are more 'Magic' oriented with few gaming tables. Not that I get to go out and play that often, but it was nice having Empire Games only 3 miles from me.

Anyways here is Dire Troll Bomber.

Hordes: Trollbloods Captain Gunnbjorn (Warlock)

My first Warlock for my Trollbloods army is now complete. I have been slowly working in Captain Gunnbjorn throughout the week, and last night I was able to finish him up.

I still have a lot of models to complete for my 2 50 point lists, and in all honsestly do not think they will be finished by June. I am going to continue working on them and if they get completed, great, if not I will then porobably fall back and play my Gators at Lock & Load.

Debating if should tackle the Highwaymen next or work on a Warbeast.... probably a Warbeast....

Hordes: Trollbloods Pyg Bushwhacker Officer & Mortar (Unit)

I am finally quite happy on how the skin turned out on my Trollbloods. As I mentioned in my previous post, I am still trying to figure out the skin tone for this army. I think with these guys I am satisfied and will be using this technique going forward on the rest of my Trollbloods. I know it is not perfect, the layering could be better, but I like the way the color came out and it did not take too long to complete. I still have a lot more models to paint to finish 2-50 point lists for Master's Lock & Load, so I needed to fins something that paints quickly and still looks decent.

Instead of just using the color 'Trollblood Base' followed with a drybrush of 'Frostbite', with these guys, after the base color, I then layered on 'Meredius Blue' to make them a bit bluer (which I prefer), then just did a few highlights with 'Frostbite' instead of drybrushing the model. I think it looks a lot cleaner this way.

Now I am going to slide the Trollbloods over for a very short while and get my final Unit for my Gators completed, the Croak Raiders. Once this Unit is completed I will then have 2-50 point lists for my Gatormen Blindwater Congregation. This will more than likely be my backup plan for Lock & Load if the Trollbloods do not get completed.

Hordes: Trollbloods Pyg Bushwhackers (Unit)

Painting my Trollbloods started back up last week. I have a lot to paint if I want to get this army ready for the Master's Tournament at the 2016 Lock & Load in June. I am hoping this army will be done in time, but do not want to rush them.

I am still working on the way I want the skin to turn out for my Trollbloods. Each model I paint I am learning something and the next models I'll apply what I learned. By the time I get to my Warlocks and Warbeasts, hopefully I will have my skin tone down.

So Friday night I was able to finish up another Unit for my Gunnbjorn list, the Pyg Bushwhackers (their UA will be done next).

I wanted to get these guys posted before we start the new month on Tuesday.

Hordes: Trollbloods Troll Impaler (Warbeast)

After finishing my Trollblood Troll Whelps the other day, I was debating if I really liked the way the bluish color came out. I was thinking it was a bit too dirty for my liking (though I usually like the dirty look, I wanted my Trollbloods to be a bit lighter).

There was only one to really find out, an that was to paint another model and try something a little different. So yesterday afternoon I dug out my Classic Troll Impaler and primed him for painting. Then after work he hit the painting table.

With this guy, I still used my wash all over the model, but afterwards, I went back and redid some of the Trollblood base color along with then drybrushing the lighter Frostbite. I think he came out a little brighter than my Troll Whelps and feel he looks a lot better. Just means more work/time to finish the Trollbloods.
