Battle Report: WM/H 7/30/2018 Khador vs Cygnar (15 Points)

Even though the game technically was played Monday night at the end of July, this is my first post for August.  I have been meaning to try out my new Warcaster ‘Karchev’ for my Khador army, and on Monday night I finally got the chance to.

I am still finalizing my list for the NOVA Open ‘Speedmachine’ event, and I have narrowed it down between ‘Butcher 1’ and ‘Karchev’.  With only 3:00 minutes per Turn, you have to play fast and I was looking for a Warcaster who can Assassinate and also survive.  So I narrowed it down to 2.  I have never played ‘Karchev’ before, so I had to see what he could do and if he can survive.  All in all, I was pretty happy with him, one drawback is his speed (being a man in a machine) he has a base speed of 4, but he can spend 1 Focus each turn to can +2” so that helps.  I still have to learn his spells a bit better and especially remember to use them.  Like I stated, 3:00 minutes is not a lot of time so you tend to forget to do a few things, and one of them was moving my Warjacks up 3” after my ‘Widowmakers’ killed a model.  I also decided to try out ‘Spriggan’ in this game, and it has been a long time since I played him, I think in this quick game he did not work out for me, the shooting really slows down the game, I need Warjacks who can get right in and do some smashing, so I think I will swap him out for 2 lesser point Warjacks.  I ended up winning the game, barely at the end of Turn 4.  ‘Stryker 2’ went in for the Assassination on ‘Karchev’ and fell short, thankfully ‘Karchev’ was camping 2 Focus and he has UNYIELDING granting him +2 ARM against melee damage.  He survived the attacks from ‘Stryker 2’ and the Turn was then over.  I gained 2 more Control Points winning me the game 6-1.  We played out top of Turn 5 and ‘Karchev’ would have then Assassinated ‘Stryker 2’.

Battle Report: WM/H 7/11/2018 Khador vs Trollbloods (50 Points)

I was supposed to have a game lined up for tonight versus my Trollbloods friend out in Kalamazoo, but yesterday afternoon he asked if we can play last night instead.  So my son and I packed our bags and drove out East.

We setup the table once again for the Mirage scenario (I actually really like this scenario and it is very lively) and I elected to play my same ‘Vlad 1’ Khador list that I had played on Monday night against my son.  My friend TJ played a ‘Doomshaper 3’ Trollblood list with a ‘Mountain King’ and ‘Mulg’.  I wont go into too many details, but forgetting my Feat that would have been a perfect situation to take out the ‘Mountain King’ really hurt me in this game.  I ended up losing 9-4 on the top of Turn 4 and lost all 5 of my Warjacks.  I think all I had left was ‘Vlad 2’ and 1 ‘Kayazy Eliminator’ where as the Trollbloods still had quite a few models left.  When TJ popped ‘Doomshaper’s 3’ Feat, it was like I was giving free health back to his Warbeasts.  I got to think about the mistakes I made after the game (while my son was getting in a game against TJ, which ‘Stryker 2’ Assassinated ‘Doomshaper 3’) and I can see where I should have done things differently.  I spent time shooting the Objective and I should have gotten the ‘Widowmaker Scouts’ in a better position and taken out the one Unit that he had.

I do not care if I win or lose (really), I just need the more playing time and learning my models better, and over the last few weeks that has helped a lot.  I am spending less time reading the cards/app (but I still do when need to) and that is helping me with the deathclock.  Soon I’ll be ready to give my 75 point lists a try.

Battle Report: WM/H 7/9/2018 Khador vs Cygnar (50 Points)

After having spent some time the last few games practicing for 15 Points “Speedmachine”, it was time to get in some practice of “Breakfastmachine”.  “Breakfastmachine” is an event at this years NOVA Open played with 50 Points, and while playing your game, you are served breakfast items to eat, I could not pass on an event like this.

I am still testing out different lists for this event, but for last night I went with ‘Vlad 1’ and my “Jaws of Wolf” theme, my son was playing his Cygnar army led by ‘Stryker 1’.

This was our first time playing the new scenario “Mirage” and from the looks of it I could tell it would be a good game to score some Control Points.  Also since I am playing a Warjack heavy “Jaws of Wolf” theme, I wanted to see how my list would do without any Rectangle Zones.

My Khador went first I basically ran all my Warjacks up the table, playing with 2 ‘Kodiaks’ it was nice to have them gain an extra 2”.  I had a ‘Widowmaker Marksman’ and ‘Widowmaker Scouts’ that were on my right flank, with Advance Deployment they walked up to my nearest Flag and sat there, from that position my ‘Marksman’ and 3 of my ‘Scouts’ were able to get some shots off on the enemies Objective and doing 6 points of damage.  These guys basically say there most of the game and destroyed the Objective for 1 CP.  They were useful for that and if needed to could have entered int the farthest Circle Zone.  ‘Vlad 1’ was in my Circle Zone casting “Signs & Portents” most of the game.  I had ‘Kayazy Eliminators’ and a ‘Berserker’ on my left flank along with ‘Yuri’. ‘Yuri’ did not do too much in this game and I should have played him towards the center of the table going for the Flag in  the forests.

After Turn 2 the score was tied 2-2, Turn 3, I was able to kill the Objective and then also contest his Circle Zone and Flag so I was up 5-2 after the top of Turn 3.  Bottom of Turn 3 Cygnar had to try and kill 2 Warjacks that were contesting his Circle Zone, a ‘Juggernaut’ and a ‘Kodiak.  With some help from ‘Stryker 1’ he was able to kill the ‘Juggernaut’.  There was not much else he could do and at the bottom of Turn 3, Khador won 7-2.

I played out the top of Turn 4 just to see what I could do next.  I set up my 2 ‘Kodiaks’ with the most Focus to prepare one of them to Charge ‘Stryker 1’.  My ‘Widowmaker Scouts’ actually cleared up most of a Unit and it actually gave room for both of my ‘Kodiaks’ to Charge ‘Stryker 1’ if need be....I only needed the 1 ‘Kodiak’ to finish off ‘Stryker 1’ (with the help of my “Signs & Portents”.

I have another 50 Point game lined up against my Trollbloods friend this Thursday night, more than likely I will play the same list, but I may try a Warcaster change.

Battle Report: WM/H 6/28/2018 Speedmachine (15 Points)

The nice thing about being on vacation for a few days, I am able to get in some gaming and painting.  Yesterday was our day to stay home and get in a few games of Warmachine/Hordes.  The NOVA Open is two months away and I still wanted to get in some practice for “Speedmachine”.  “Speedmachne” is 15 Point armies and played with 3:00 minute turns.  The 3:00 minute turns is really allowing me to learn my army better and play faster, I am hoping this faster play will rollover to when I play the larger 50 and 75 Point practice games.

First up during the day I played my son’s Cygnar army led by ‘Stryker 3’ and I played my Khador with ‘Vlad 1’.  I had a Unit on a scoring zone collecting points for me while the rest of my army was battling out, my son had nothing he could contest with until late in the game, by that time one of my ‘Juggernauts’ was able to Assassinate ‘Stryker 3’.  If I did not Assassinate ‘Stryker 3’, I would have one the game on Points that turn.

Later in the evening my Trollbloods friend TJ came out for a some practice games.  First up he played my Khador army and I was playing the same list as earlier in the day.  TJ elected to give ‘Borka 2’ a try.  This was a hard fought battle, ‘Borka 2’s’ Feat really dampened my plans, but I managed to stay in the game.  We battled it out all the way till the end of Turn 7 and I barely lost 2-1.

After my son played a game against TJ’s same list (and my son also lost), I played TJ again and he went with ‘Borka 1’ and a ‘Mountain King’.  I played the same list as earlier, but I swapped out ‘Vlad 1’ with ‘Butcher 1’.  We ended up going to Turn 4 and the score was 0-0 at this point.  TJ elected to charge into ‘Butcher 1’ and failed to hit on his Charge attack, ‘Butcher 1’ was camping 3 Focus and he managed to stay alive with 5 boxes.  ‘Butcher 1’ then popped his Feat and charge back at ‘Borka 1’, able to do so with his 2” reach and I was able to Assassinate ‘Borka 1’.  That was my first Assassination ever against TJ.

I am still undecided between playing ‘Vlad 1’ and ‘Butcher 1’, I still have 2 months to think about it before the NOVA Open.  I like ‘Vlad 1’ for his “Signs & Portents” spell, but ‘Butcher 1’ is a lot better in combat.

Besides getting in some gaming yesterday, I was also able to start on my ‘Kodiak’ Warjacks for my Khador army.  I need these two Warjacks for my 75 Point list for the NOVA Open Team Tournament.  I have only played with ‘Kodiak’s once before, so I know I will need a lot of practice with them.  I should be getting them done sometime later today or tomorrow.  More than likely they will be posted next week for the month of July.

Battle Report: WM/H 6/18/2018 Minions vs Cygnar (15 Points Speedmachine)

One of the events my son and I will be playing in this years NOVA Open in September is called “Speedmachine”.  It is Warmachine/Hordes, 15 point armies and 3:00 minute turns, hence the name “Speedmachine”.

To save on space in the car while traveling I was only planning on bringing one army with me, and that is my Khador army, but yesterday I was thinking about my Minions for a little while and decided to see what kind of 15 point list I could come up with.  As with my Khador list (running a ‘Conquest’), I decided to build my Minion list with my ‘Dracodile’.  The reason being, I am a slow player to begin with, so the less models I have to move around and think about the faster I can play (that’s my theory).  I still plan on testing my Khador “Speedmachine” in the next couple of weeks, but last night it was all about my Minions.

My son came down into the basement carrying his Cygnar army (which I expected), but I expected him to be playing his ‘Stormwall’ model, but instead came down with 2 Heavy Warjacks and 1 Light Warjack led by ‘Stryker 1’ and a ‘Journeyman Warcaster’.

Scenario: Breakdown

Minions

Theme: The Blindwater Congregation

0 / 0 Free Cards     15 / 15 Army

Rask - WB: +27

-    Dracodile - PC: 36 (Battlegroup Points Used: 27)

Bog Trog Mist Speaker - PC: 4

Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew - Leader & 1 Grunt: 2

---

Cygnar

Theme: Heavy Metal

1 / 1 Free Cards     14 / 15 Army

Commander Coleman Stryker - WJ: +30

-    Squire - PC: 0

-    Ironclad - PC: 12 (Battlegroup Points Used: 12)

-    Ol’ Rowdy - PC: 18 (Battlegroup Points Used: 18)

Journeyman Warcaster - PC: 4

-    Hunter - PC: 10 (I think he had a Hunter)

3:00 minutes per Turn is not a lot of time, but I thought it was very fun.

Turn 1 Cygnar ran up the board and I did the same with my ‘Dracodile’ up to the Zone and advanced my other models.  ‘Rask’ popped his Feat since he was now in charge range of ‘Ol Rowdy’.

Turn 2 Cygnar could not Charge anything and moved some model to my left Zone so he can start to contest a Circle.  Minions upkept Fury on ‘Dracodile’ and Charged into ‘Iron Clad’.  I just fell short of killing him and my time expired (I did forget that I can Assault with my ‘Dracodile’)

Turn 3 Cygnar’s ‘Iron Clad’ and ‘Ol Rowdy’ went to town on my ‘Dracodile’, but he was still standing, the rest of the army advanced and his ‘Hunter’ was able to get some hits on ‘Rask’ which I transferred to the ‘Dracodile’.  I did some healing on my ‘Dracodile’ and I was able to finish ‘Iron Clad’ and do quite a bit of damage on ‘Ol Rowdy’.  I also moved ‘Rask’ into the Rectangle Zone and scored a point. 1-0

Turn 4 saw Cygnar try to kill the ‘Dracodile’ with ‘Ol Rowdy’, but being badly damaged, the ‘Dracodile was still standing’.  On my Turn, the ‘Dracodile’ was finally able to finish off ‘Ol Rowdy’ but I did not have much time left to do anything to ‘Stryker’. 2-0

Turn 5 Cygnar’s ‘Stryker 1’ was able to bring down my ‘Dracodile’ and his ‘Hunter was able to do some damage on ‘Rask 1’.  I knew now it was kill or be killed so ‘Rask 1’ cast Fury on himself and charged into ‘Stryker 1’.  Well ‘Rask 1’ is not much of melee caster and he fell short causing only 9 points of damege.

Turn 6, we all know what happens now.  With ‘Rask 1’ only having 6 boxes left.....’Stryker 1’ was easily able to bring him down.  It was an Assassination Win for Cygnar.

I need to think about if there are any other Minions combos I can think of that I can play fast with.  I was pretty good controlling the ‘Dracodile’, though I never did get to get a spray shot in since I forgot to do it with Assault.  I think they may have helped a lot since I would have hit ‘Iron Clad’, ‘Ol Rowdy’ and ‘Stryker 1’ but with 3:00 minute turns you are trying to move as fast as possible.  All honesty if I would have sprayed, I probably would have ran out of time for his melee attacks.

I really like the low point level games that play fast....looking forward to trying some of my Khador combinations.

Battle Report: Warmachine 6/7/2018 Khador vs Circle (50 Points)

It has been some time since my last game of Warmachine/Hordes but last night my son and I finally got to get a game in downstairs in the man cave.  To keep things a little quicker we played only 50 points and I wanted to proxy in my new ‘Assault Chariot’ that had just arrived.

I elected to play ‘Vlad 1’ (I am really liking his spell “Signs & Portents” which for a bad player, it really helps out) and my son played ‘Kromac 1’ which is a change from playing ‘Kromac 2’ most of the time.

I went first and tried to quickly move my army up the table, especially with the ‘Assault Chariot’, I really wanted to see what kind of damage this model can do.  Turn 2 I was outside of charge range, so the ‘Assault Chariot’ advanced towards his ‘Tharn Ravagers’ and laid down some fire.  The ‘Assault Chariot’ was able to get 4 shots, and only 1 was not a direct hit (with S&P).  The ‘Assault Chariot’ managed to do quite a bit of damage leaving only 2 models with just a few boxes left, my ‘Winter Guard Rifle Corps’ were able to finish off the Unit.  My 2 Warjacks advanced forward but were too far for any charges.

I did end up losing the ‘Assault Chariot’ from multiple attacks from his Warbeasts, so I think the trade off with his Unit and my Chariot were even.  My problem now was a huge forest protecting his Warbeast from my charging Warjacks.

At this point my son had actually clocked out and I was really close with less than 2 minutes on my clock.  We decided to play out the next turn.

I ended up getting my ‘WGRC’ around the flank and got shots off on ‘Kromac 1’, with once again “S&P” which then Assassinated ‘Kromac 1’.

Control Point wise it was pretty close through out the Rounds with me leading by 1-2.

Scenario: Standoff

Daily Chronicle: 'Weekend Roundup 1/22-24/2016'

Since I did not finish any models this past weekend, I thought I would start up a 'Weekend Roundup' post for anything that was happening gaming related over the weekend.

On Friday night 1/22/2016 my son and I finally play tested our full 50 point lists for the Las Vegas Open. I made some slight changes to what I was originally going to play. Speed of play has been slowing me down in my games, and I thought I would probably need to take a few less models to help remedy that situation. I am going to Las Vegas for 'fun', if I win a game then great, if not, oh well, at least I got to play some Warmachine. We played the scenario 'Outflank' for the first time and we decided not to use a clock for this game since it was our first time with the full 50 points.

Conquest really does tower over everyone else.

Turns out we both played pretty slow learning our models. I had a time limit (3 hours) to play the game so we can both get home to bed (cycling race for me the next day, work for my son). In the very very end I did have 1 CP, but I am calling this game a 'Draw' since time would have expired long ago for one of us.

Saturday had no gaming or modeling for me. With driving to Picacho, AZ for a Time Trail cycling race and later in the evening taking all 3 of my boys to see the Arizona Coyotes vs Las Angeles Kings NHL game, the day was busy.

After a nice Sunday leisure coffee bike ride, I started on another model for my son. I asked him on Friday night if he wanted me to paint up his Colossal so he can bring it with the La Vegas for some 'fun' gaming with it. He said sure, so I started the prep work and laid down the first color.

Stormwall WIP

During the week I had also started the base color for my Khador Ruin Warjack. He will have to be moved to the back burner while I work on Stormwall for my son.

Ruin WIP
Since I will be busy during the week working on Stormwall and maybe a little on Ruin (when I get tired of 'blue') more than likely there will not be too many posts here. But stay tuned on Twitter @TOWC_Gaming for some WIP photos of these two.

Battle Report: WM 1/12/2015 Khador vs Cygnar (25 Points)

Last night my son went out to play a quick 25 Point game (what was suppose to be quick) to try and get familiar with some Units we have never played before. Playing with new Units ended up taking a bit longer than expected, glad we choose to test with 25 Points instead of the full 50.

He added the 'Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team' to his Cygnar list, and I was playing the 'Great Bears of Gallowswood' and 'Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters' for the first time for my Khador Army.
From the SR2015 Packet, we rolled the scenario "Two Fronts" which we have not yet played before, so it was going to be a good learning experience.

25 Points "Two Fronts"
First time playing with our F.A.T. Mat and Broken Egg Games terrain.
Fully painted Cygnar.
Fully painted Khador.
Free Strike got the better of Stryker.
What I found out playing this scenario is that getting Control Points is pretty difficult. Each of the Objective Markers contest the Zone, so you need to destroy the Objective Marker before receiving and Control Points.

I had a chance to destroy the enemy Objective Marker, but elected to clear out his Warjack Ol'Rowdy first with Juggernaut. By doing so, it had left a little room for Stryker to try and get the charge on Butcher. Stryker cast his Spell that allowed him some movement around the water, then he Charged towards Butcher. By doing so, he went through the Melee Range of Juggernaut and I was awarded a Free Strike. Juggernaut managed to hit Stryker with the +2 bonus and I rolled an 11 for damage (P+S 19 +3 from Fury vs ARM 20) doing 13 points of damage (we forgot that Free Strikes that hit get Boosted Damage rolls). Stryker already had 4 points of damage on him from the Nyss, so the 13 points from Juggernaut brought down Stryker. It was pure luck for Khador.

We decided to play out Stryker's attacks on Butcher just to see what would happen. The dice were not with Cygnar as he missed all his attacks. Butcher would have then popped his Feat and made minced meat out of Stryker.

Battle Report: WM 12/23/2015 Khador vs Cygnar (35 Points)

Another practice game for my son and I last night, once again we played 35 Points so I can get more familiar with my army and time management, and once again I was cutting it pretty close with my clock.

I was down to my final 8 minutes and down 2 Control Points to 0 and I saw an opening and I figure I better go for it. Cygnar left their Warcaser Stryker in nice LOS of my Warcaster Sorscha. I first moved Conquest up 4 inches to get a bit closer so that all his guns would have range on Stryker. I then Activated Sorscha and moved her 6 inches and getting Stryker within her Control Range. I then popped Sorscha's Feat which doubles any damage above the targets ARM without Immunity: Cold. I had 2 Focus on her so I decided to try and cast Razor Wind against Stryker, but failed. Then it was time for Conquest to take his shot. With his Main Guns I boosted the Attack and just barely got a hit on Stryker. I then boosted his Damage roll and did 9 points of damage. With Damage being doubled by Sorscha's Feat, Conquest did 18 points of damage which outright killed Stryker. What a lucky shot. If Conquest would have failed, my Winter Guard were going to move into position to do a Combine Range attack against Stryker which I know would have finished him off.

Battle Report: WM 12/14/2015 Khador vs Cygnar (35 Points)

Last night I met my son for another practice game at our LGS (Empire Games) to get ready for the LVO. It is my second game playing with the Steamroller 2015 scenarios (first game was last week which I lost, not documented). We have been testing with 35 point lists so I can familiarize myself more with the rules and my army before we make the jump to 50 points.

We have also been playing with the Death Clock since all games at the LVO will be using this format. Time management has been hurting me in these 2 games. The first game I lost because my time expired, and last night I got the win via Assasination just as time expired.

During deployment I had forgotten that my 'Flag' does not award me any Control Points unless it is controlled by my Warcaster. I used my Winter Guard to go for my 'Flag', it worked out in the end since they were used to defend my Flag, but I should have ran that Unit to capture my opponents Flag and use Conquest to defend my own. Lesson learned, that's what these practice games are for.

Due to 'Kill Box' I was able to receive 2 Control Points at the end of Turn 2. My son then received 1 Control Point when he eliminated a WG on my Flag. After a few long distance shots at Stryker through out the game, I was able to finish him off with a Combined Melee Attack from my Winter Guard using Kovnik's speech that granted me +3 STR and Lady Aiyana's 'Kiss of Lyliss'.

A lot of painting for him to complete for Las Vegas.

Battle Report: WM 9/5/2015 Khador vs Cygnar (15/25)

This past weekend was Labor Day Weekend and also on 9/5 was my oldest son's 20th birthday. SO he had mentioned that he wanted to spend the day out going to the shooting range and getting in a few games of Warmachine.

Since the other night was my first time playing Warmachine in 3 years, we were still keeping the games small and going through all the phases slowly. It is all starting to come back to me.

For being the 'Birthday Boy', his dice were not with him today.

We started with a 15 point game follwed by our 25 point game.

I am not much for remembering all the details of my games, so this is more of just a quick summary along with a few pictures.

Game 1: 15 Points "Mangled Metal"

Player: Dean
Faction: Khador
Orsus Zoktavir, The Butcher of Khardov - WJ: +6
- Berserker - PC: 6
- Juggernaut - PC: 7
- Marauder - PC: 7

Player: Dragi
Faction: Cygnar
Commander Coleman Stryker - WJ: +6
- Ol' Rowdy - PC: 9
- Hunter - PC: 6
- Lancer - PC: 6

This was a win for Khador. Stryker used his Feat a little too early and came charging into Butcher. His dice failed him and was only able to do 13 damage on Butcher. Now it was time for the mighty Khador to take revenge and demolish Stryker
Game 2: 25 Points "Break The Line"

Player: Dean
Faction: Khador
Orsus Zoktavir, The Butcher of Khardov - WJ: +6
- War Dog
- Destroyer - PC: 9
- Juggernaut - PC: 7

Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich - PC: 2
Yuri the Axe - PC: 3

Winter Guard Infantry - Leader & 5 Grunts: 4
- 2 1 Rocketeer's: 2
Winter Guard Mortar Crew - Leader & 1 Grunt: 3

Player: Dragi
Faction: Cygnar
Lord General Coleman Stryker - WJ: +5
- Squire
- Ol' Rowdy - PC: 9
- Stormclad - PC: 10

Journeyman Warcaster - PC: 3

Stormblade Infantry - Leader & 5 Grunts: 5

Once again another victory for Khador. The mighty Khador Warjacks were too much for Cygnar. Once they cleared the Cygnar Warjacks, it was time to assassinate Stryker3.
We were hoping to get in one more 25 Point game later in the evening, but with dinner and desert we ran out of time. We'd like to play our next game using the 'death clock' so we can practice our timed games for any upcoming tournaments.
