Battle Report: WM/H 7/11/2018 Khador vs Trollbloods (50 Points)

I was supposed to have a game lined up for tonight versus my Trollbloods friend out in Kalamazoo, but yesterday afternoon he asked if we can play last night instead.  So my son and I packed our bags and drove out East.

We setup the table once again for the Mirage scenario (I actually really like this scenario and it is very lively) and I elected to play my same ‘Vlad 1’ Khador list that I had played on Monday night against my son.  My friend TJ played a ‘Doomshaper 3’ Trollblood list with a ‘Mountain King’ and ‘Mulg’.  I wont go into too many details, but forgetting my Feat that would have been a perfect situation to take out the ‘Mountain King’ really hurt me in this game.  I ended up losing 9-4 on the top of Turn 4 and lost all 5 of my Warjacks.  I think all I had left was ‘Vlad 2’ and 1 ‘Kayazy Eliminator’ where as the Trollbloods still had quite a few models left.  When TJ popped ‘Doomshaper’s 3’ Feat, it was like I was giving free health back to his Warbeasts.  I got to think about the mistakes I made after the game (while my son was getting in a game against TJ, which ‘Stryker 2’ Assassinated ‘Doomshaper 3’) and I can see where I should have done things differently.  I spent time shooting the Objective and I should have gotten the ‘Widowmaker Scouts’ in a better position and taken out the one Unit that he had.

I do not care if I win or lose (really), I just need the more playing time and learning my models better, and over the last few weeks that has helped a lot.  I am spending less time reading the cards/app (but I still do when need to) and that is helping me with the deathclock.  Soon I’ll be ready to give my 75 point lists a try.

Battle Report: WM/H 6/18/2018 Minions vs Cygnar (15 Points Speedmachine)

One of the events my son and I will be playing in this years NOVA Open in September is called “Speedmachine”.  It is Warmachine/Hordes, 15 point armies and 3:00 minute turns, hence the name “Speedmachine”.

To save on space in the car while traveling I was only planning on bringing one army with me, and that is my Khador army, but yesterday I was thinking about my Minions for a little while and decided to see what kind of 15 point list I could come up with.  As with my Khador list (running a ‘Conquest’), I decided to build my Minion list with my ‘Dracodile’.  The reason being, I am a slow player to begin with, so the less models I have to move around and think about the faster I can play (that’s my theory).  I still plan on testing my Khador “Speedmachine” in the next couple of weeks, but last night it was all about my Minions.

My son came down into the basement carrying his Cygnar army (which I expected), but I expected him to be playing his ‘Stormwall’ model, but instead came down with 2 Heavy Warjacks and 1 Light Warjack led by ‘Stryker 1’ and a ‘Journeyman Warcaster’.

Scenario: Breakdown

Minions

Theme: The Blindwater Congregation

0 / 0 Free Cards     15 / 15 Army

Rask - WB: +27

-    Dracodile - PC: 36 (Battlegroup Points Used: 27)

Bog Trog Mist Speaker - PC: 4

Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew - Leader & 1 Grunt: 2

---

Cygnar

Theme: Heavy Metal

1 / 1 Free Cards     14 / 15 Army

Commander Coleman Stryker - WJ: +30

-    Squire - PC: 0

-    Ironclad - PC: 12 (Battlegroup Points Used: 12)

-    Ol’ Rowdy - PC: 18 (Battlegroup Points Used: 18)

Journeyman Warcaster - PC: 4

-    Hunter - PC: 10 (I think he had a Hunter)

3:00 minutes per Turn is not a lot of time, but I thought it was very fun.

Turn 1 Cygnar ran up the board and I did the same with my ‘Dracodile’ up to the Zone and advanced my other models.  ‘Rask’ popped his Feat since he was now in charge range of ‘Ol Rowdy’.

Turn 2 Cygnar could not Charge anything and moved some model to my left Zone so he can start to contest a Circle.  Minions upkept Fury on ‘Dracodile’ and Charged into ‘Iron Clad’.  I just fell short of killing him and my time expired (I did forget that I can Assault with my ‘Dracodile’)

Turn 3 Cygnar’s ‘Iron Clad’ and ‘Ol Rowdy’ went to town on my ‘Dracodile’, but he was still standing, the rest of the army advanced and his ‘Hunter’ was able to get some hits on ‘Rask’ which I transferred to the ‘Dracodile’.  I did some healing on my ‘Dracodile’ and I was able to finish ‘Iron Clad’ and do quite a bit of damage on ‘Ol Rowdy’.  I also moved ‘Rask’ into the Rectangle Zone and scored a point. 1-0

Turn 4 saw Cygnar try to kill the ‘Dracodile’ with ‘Ol Rowdy’, but being badly damaged, the ‘Dracodile was still standing’.  On my Turn, the ‘Dracodile’ was finally able to finish off ‘Ol Rowdy’ but I did not have much time left to do anything to ‘Stryker’. 2-0

Turn 5 Cygnar’s ‘Stryker 1’ was able to bring down my ‘Dracodile’ and his ‘Hunter was able to do some damage on ‘Rask 1’.  I knew now it was kill or be killed so ‘Rask 1’ cast Fury on himself and charged into ‘Stryker 1’.  Well ‘Rask 1’ is not much of melee caster and he fell short causing only 9 points of damege.

Turn 6, we all know what happens now.  With ‘Rask 1’ only having 6 boxes left.....’Stryker 1’ was easily able to bring him down.  It was an Assassination Win for Cygnar.

I need to think about if there are any other Minions combos I can think of that I can play fast with.  I was pretty good controlling the ‘Dracodile’, though I never did get to get a spray shot in since I forgot to do it with Assault.  I think they may have helped a lot since I would have hit ‘Iron Clad’, ‘Ol Rowdy’ and ‘Stryker 1’ but with 3:00 minute turns you are trying to move as fast as possible.  All honesty if I would have sprayed, I probably would have ran out of time for his melee attacks.

I really like the low point level games that play fast....looking forward to trying some of my Khador combinations.

Battle Report: Warmachine 6/7/2018 Khador vs Circle (50 Points)

It has been some time since my last game of Warmachine/Hordes but last night my son and I finally got to get a game in downstairs in the man cave.  To keep things a little quicker we played only 50 points and I wanted to proxy in my new ‘Assault Chariot’ that had just arrived.

I elected to play ‘Vlad 1’ (I am really liking his spell “Signs & Portents” which for a bad player, it really helps out) and my son played ‘Kromac 1’ which is a change from playing ‘Kromac 2’ most of the time.

I went first and tried to quickly move my army up the table, especially with the ‘Assault Chariot’, I really wanted to see what kind of damage this model can do.  Turn 2 I was outside of charge range, so the ‘Assault Chariot’ advanced towards his ‘Tharn Ravagers’ and laid down some fire.  The ‘Assault Chariot’ was able to get 4 shots, and only 1 was not a direct hit (with S&P).  The ‘Assault Chariot’ managed to do quite a bit of damage leaving only 2 models with just a few boxes left, my ‘Winter Guard Rifle Corps’ were able to finish off the Unit.  My 2 Warjacks advanced forward but were too far for any charges.

I did end up losing the ‘Assault Chariot’ from multiple attacks from his Warbeasts, so I think the trade off with his Unit and my Chariot were even.  My problem now was a huge forest protecting his Warbeast from my charging Warjacks.

At this point my son had actually clocked out and I was really close with less than 2 minutes on my clock.  We decided to play out the next turn.

I ended up getting my ‘WGRC’ around the flank and got shots off on ‘Kromac 1’, with once again “S&P” which then Assassinated ‘Kromac 1’.

Control Point wise it was pretty close through out the Rounds with me leading by 1-2.

Scenario: Standoff

Battle Report: Hordes 4/5/2018 Minions vs Trollbloods (75 Points)

It has been awhile since I met up with my friend for another game of Hordes (3/12/2018) just before AdeptiCon and last night it was my time to host the game.  I am leaning towards playing a ‘Rask’ Will Work For Food theme at this years NOVA Open Team Tournament at the end of August and I figure it is time to actually start getting some practice in.  I do not have ‘Rorsh & Brine’ assembled yet so they did not make the list last night and I also wanted to give my ‘Dracodile’ another go at it.

I am leaning towards the Will Work For Theme hoping that it may save me some time on the clock with less models to move around, well last night that did not prove to be the point and I still clocked out during Turn 2.  My deployment time was much better, but I was still referencing the rules a lot during my turn (especially with the Lesser Warlocks) and that chewed up most of my time.  We did play it to the Top of Turn 4 though.  Since the game was getting kind of long on time, I just walked ‘Rask’ up to his army and surrender.  Up to that point it was actually kind of close, the score was actually 0-0 and I had killed more models than he had.  He was running two Units of Champions in his list and this Turn 4 they would have finished off the ‘Dracodile’.

‘Skarath’ was a MVP for my army killing off a Unit by herself with her sprays and attacks (a big plus with OVERTAKE and a 2” melee range).  In all honesty I think my Warbeasts ‘Skarath’, ‘Snapjaw’ and ‘Lug’ did more damage than the ‘Dracodile’ and ‘Wrastler’.  ‘Orin Midwinter’ also made his debut and CHAIN LIGHTNING did help with some of his Units.  Seeing how the Trollblood list did not drop any smoke clouds, my ‘Bog Trog Mist Speaker’ really did not do much, but he is there just in case ‘Kolgrima’ decides to show up.

I still need MUCH MORE practice with these guys and to memorize my rules.

Battle Report: Hordes 3/12/2018 Minions vs Trollbloods (75 Points)

Well last night I got to play ‘Barnabas 2’ once again vs ‘Kolgrima 1’ and once again ‘Barnabas 2’ has not really dont too much for me.  I cannot get him to battle for him to really do any damage.  At least this time I did not lose by clock, but lost by Assiassination at the top of Turn 3 (Trollbloods went first).  ‘Kolgrima 1’ kept on using FREEZING MIST and placing 4 3” AOE cloud effects that blocked anything ‘Barnabas 2’ can charge into.  When ‘Kolgrima 1’ finally got close enough she then used multiple WIINTER’S TIDE to reduce ‘Barnabas 2’ to 1 damage box and his ‘Earthborn Dire Troll’ then charged on to finish the job (though it was much harder for the Earthborn to hit Barnabas 2).  WINITER’S TIDE from ‘Kolgrima 1’ got to ignore SWARM and EXECRATION OF BLACKEST NIGHT that ‘Barnabas 2’ had on himself.

I did a fairly good job with the rest of the game, I believe I had actually killed more models than he had.  One of my Units of ‘Gatorman Posse’ were doing a good job contesting a zone on my right while killing me some ‘Northkin Raider’ and my other Unit of ‘Gatorman Posse’ were contesting a zone on my left while holding up a Unit of ‘Northkin Bear Handler & Battle Bears’.  One of his ‘Battle Bears’ Units did Ambush on my right side charging in on ‘Wrong Eye’ and easily taking him out which also removed ‘Snapjaw’.

Control Points wise, the score was 0-0, so I played that part of the game right...it is still just a matter of trying to get ‘Barnabas 2’ in the right position.

Battle Report: Hordes 3/1/2018 Minions vs Trollbloods (75 Points)

Last night I was able to get in another game of Warmachine/Hordes against my friend TJ and this time it was my time to host so TJ made the drive out.  Unfortunately I was so caught up in the game that I completely forgot to take any pictures during the game and did not realize it until TJ had half his army already packed away.

It was the debut of ‘Barnabas 2’ for me and for my friend, he was playing ‘Grim 1’.  I am still SUPER SLOW when it comes to deploying and playing the game.  I spent 8 minutes just in deploying because while I’m deploying I end up looking up rules for my models to see exactly what they do so I know where to place them.  I need to get better knowing each of my models.  Part of my problem is I am always changing up lists, models and casters that it is always a new learning experience for me.  I like the playstyle that ‘Barnabas 2’ has to offer, the beat stick Warlock, but he did not get to do too much of that last night.  He did take out a couple Trollkin Champions and score 2 CP’s for one of the Zones, but other than than he was held up from the “Feat” of ‘Grim 1’.

It was also the first time for my ‘Boneswarms’, ‘Kwaak’, ‘Boil Master’ and ‘Void Leechs’ so I had a lot of learning going on during the game.  Plus I was also playing with ‘Wrong Eye & Snapjaw’ which I do not do that often.  The only good thing I had going for me last night were my ‘Gatorman Posse’ and I felt very comfortable with them.  The ‘Gatorman Posse’ were able to take out a Unit of ‘Trollkin Raiders’ and a Unit of ‘Northkin Bear Handlers & Battle Bears’.  I am considering swapping out ‘Wrong Eye & Snapjaw’ for a third Unit of ‘Gatorman Posse’, but then I feel like my list would be lacking some hitting power with only have 1 ‘Blackhide Wrastler’.

I clocked out well before we were close to finishing the game, but we played it out so I could learn my models a bit more and my friend TJ is practicing for a Champions event at AdeptiCon.  We got down to Turn 4 and I ended up losing 7-2 in Control Points.

Battle Report: Hordes 1/25/2018 Minions vs Trollbloods (75 Points)

For now most of my Warmachine/Hordes gaming is against my friend who only plays Trollbloods, so most of my reports will either be my Minions or Khador vs his Trollbloods (until I can get to some events and play other opponents).

Last night I decided to try a new caster for my Minions and used ‘Maelok’, and as always when trying something new I am very unfamiliar on how he actually works.  I knew how to play a lot of his spells, but also missed out on a lot things (mainly gathering souls) which hurt me down the road with Fury.  The Trollbloods player usually plays a high count infantry list with 2 Units of Champions and I knew it was going to be pretty tough.  Mortality was a nice spell from Maelok and I was able to get it off twice which really helped a lot.  In the end, again it was the clock that lost the game for me.  I clocked out at the bottom of Turn 3, with myself being up 1-0 in the Scenario.

Battle Report: Hordes 1/11/2018 Minions vs Trollbloods (75 Points)

Last night I was able to play my second miniature game of the week (and year) and this time it was Hordes, and the debut of my ‘Dracodile’ model.  Although ‘Dracodile’ looked really good on the table, my friend playing the Trollbloods did a really good job isolating him and limiting his damage output.

Scenario: Spread the Net

I did a really good job taking out Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters with my Gatorman Posse, but that was about all I could do in the game.  Kolgrima1 kept casting Freezing Mist and placing 3” AOE cloud effects surrounding the Dracodile and on the Dracodile that I could not even hit his Earthborn due to the cloud and the fact the Earthborn was near shallow water.  The Dracodile did manage to get off Acid Breath and hit Mulg and a Solo (killing the Solo), but that was the extent of his damage output.  My 2 Blackhide Wrastlers were also useless due to cloud cover stopping charges and Nyss Hunters blocking charge lanes.  He did a really good job with screening his army.  The score was 3-1 in favor of the Trollbloods before Kolgrima1 could get to Rask with Winter’s Tide and then finish him off with Mulg.  I transferred as much damage as I could to Blackhide Wrastler and the Dracodile.  Rask was Assinated.

Battle Report: Hordes 2/27/2017 Minions vs Trollbloods (50 Points)

Last night I headed out east again to Kalamazoo to meet TJ at Odyssey Games for another game of Hordes.  I met TJ the previous day on Sunday, but we did not get a game in so we schedule one for Monday night.  Even though the store is 41 miles away, it only takes me about 40 minutes to get to since it is all interstate driving for me.  I am just going to have to watch my number of miles driven on my new leased car.  We were planning on getting a game at his house, but a last minute change we decided on the store.  TJ wanted to place an order for his Trollbloods.  While I was there, I also picked up some tokens for Fire damage and such (since on Sunday I realized I had no Fire tokens).

Since I am still getting a feel for Hordes (I am used to the Warmachine playstyle) and learning what my Minions can do, we elected for another 50 point game.  I was using the same list I played on Sunday.  The more times I can play with those models, hopefully the better I can learn how they play.

I setup the gaming mat and terrain and TJ rolled for the scenario.  We were going to be playing 'The Pit' from SR2016.

I (Minions) ended up losing 5-1.  At least Rask stayed alive and was able to secure a point for me.  I still made some mistakes.  Forgetting to use his Feat  on my first turn (to prevent all the shooting damage I took in Turn 2), and sending my Croak Raiders around the forest terrain which took a lot of time.  I managed to kill some of his warrior models and a lot of damage on his Bomber beasts, but not enough to kill him.  The shooting he had from his Warcaster and the Bombers were incredible.  When his Warcaster hits with shooting, it causes a Knockdown, which them made it easier for his Bombers to hit.  I was contesting the Pit for quite awhile, then he managed to kill my second Wrastler and cleared out my remaining Posse in the Pit.  So a loss to the Minions.

Using my Feat would have helped.  But I though my Veil of Mists could have protected my Wrastlers, but some of the base was still visible.  If I could have kept them protected, I could have gotten charges in on his Bombers on Turn 2 and the outcome may have been different.

Just need more practice.
