Bolt Action: United States 'Lieutenant Richard Winters'

"Lieutenant Richard 'Dick' Winters, made famous as the main character in the TV show Band of Brothers, Major Winters was the highly decorated commander of ‘Easy Company’, part of the US 101st Airborne Division, during World War II."

Back in June 2014, Historicon worked with Warlord Games and released a special 30th Anniversary Special Miniature fitting tribute to Richard 'Dick' Winters.

My son and I were not able to attend Historicon (we were living in Arizona and Historicon is on the East Coast) but Warlord Games was selling the model on their online store for that weekend.  So I made note in my calendar and had to make sure that I ordered it for my son.

Fast forward three years and yesterday Lt. Winters finally saw my painting table.  Unfortunately he his modeled with a Rifle, and in Bolt Action most people play their Lieutenants's with SMG's, but it would be nice change once in awhile for him to hit the battlefield.

Bolt Action: United States 'Paratrooper Lieutenant Team (Late War)'

We actually had a pretty decent weather day today (50 and Sunny) so that meant I was going have to be ooutside again early afternoon doing more yard work (the drawbacks of owning a house).  If I wanted to get any painting done it was going to have to be first thing in the morning, and that is what I did.

I have yet to clean the flash and glue the models for my sons's second Paratrooper Squad, so I decided to work on his Lieutenant's Team today and a special character I'll be posting tomorrow morning.

Bolt Action: United States 'Paratrooper Squad 1 (Late War)'

After finishing my son's Airborne Bazooka Teams the other day, I decided to go ahead and start on his first Paratrooper Squad.  The problem was I had nothing assembled or primed that was ready for painting.  So it took me a little while to go through his models and assemble the two Squad that he will be running in his Market Garden list along with cleaning the models up and getting them glued to their bases.

For his list I decided to go with x1 NCO w/SMG, x4 SMG and x7 Rifles.  Both squads will be identical and both will start with the 'Full Strength' rule (in case he needs it early on.)

I still have to assemble the second Squad so I will probably move onto getting his LT/Team completed first.  Then we'll take a short break from the United States and see what hits the painting table.

Bolt Action: United States 'Airborne Bazooka Teams 1 & 2'

For next years AdeptiCon 2018 my son and I will be playing in the Bolt Action Team Tournament.  Jeremy runs the Team Tournament to be more of a themed event and for everyone to have fun, where as the top award in the event is Best Sportsman.  My son and I always wanted to add Airborne Units to our armies, so we decided that we will do a 'Market Garden' themed army.  My son will be playing United States, and I will paint up some British for myself.

I still have plenty of time to paint before AdeptiCon 2018, but I thought I might as well slowly get started so that I am not rushed last minute next year.  This also gives us time to modify our lists in case anything changes rules wise or points wise.  For now we are basing our armies on 1600 points (800/800) as were the rules for this year.

When most people think of the uniforms for the United States Airborne, they think of movies like 'Saving Private Ryan' or TV shows like 'Band of Brothers', but for 'Operation Market Garden', the United States Airborne were issued the new M1943 uniform which was a darker shade of green.

I was curious how they guys would turn out with the M1943 uniforms and painted up my sons Bazooka Teams yesterdy as test subjects.  I am actually really happy the way they turned out and think 800 points painted like this will look real nice.

Daily Chronicle: More British Inbound

Back in May of 2014 when my oldest son graduated High School, I purchased him an US Airborne 1000 point army (that we never got around to assembling and painting). So I know we are 15 months away from AdeptiCon 2018, but my son and I are going to work on a themed force the Bolt Action Team Tournament (assuming they will run it again in 2018).

The Team Tournament for Bolt Action is all about having a themed army and having a good time. So since my son never finished his US Airborne, I thought it would be a good incentive to get them done. So now what are we going to theme his army with, since I plan on working on my British all year long for 2017, why not theme his US Airborne with some British Airborne for 'Operation Market Garden'. How successful will this army be, I dont know (especially without any tanks), but I think it will be a nice themed theater list and fun to play.

So I just ordered myself the British 1000 point Airborne army. (This years Team Tournament it is 800 points per player, so this should be enough models, even if they up the points to 1000 for next year).

Bolt Action: United States 'M10 Tank Destroyer'

WOW! it has been 4 months since I last posted a model that I painted, let alone a few actual months that I posted anything at all.  It's not that I haven't been gaming, I have been playing some X-Wing during that time, I just haven't been posting any battle reports on it.  But it has been since D-Day that I last played a game of Bolt Action.  Other things in life just get in the way.  I've been trying to get back into shape....again.... and waking up early every morning to go bike riding just makes me too tired in the evenings to want to do anything.  Plus our Sundays are now devoted to playing the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons.

So lately I've been thinking about Bolt Action again, what a perfect time to jump back in with the new WWII movie that opened up today 'FURY'.  With having my wife and kid work at the theater, my son and I did catch the late night premier last night and I really enjoyed the movie.  It got the blood pumping again to get back to painting my Bolt Action.  I probably wont go all out crazy like I did to start the year off, but I will slowly be adding more models to the painting table when time allows.

I have a lot of Bolt Action models that need assembling and painting, and in honor of the movie, I started off with a tank.  My sons United States M10 Tank Destroyer.  This is only his second tank for his US army.

Bolt Action: United States '75mm Pack Howitzer'

With today being the 70th anniversary of D-Day, I had to get something completed for Bolt Action.

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Normandy – perhaps the most pivotal moment in World War II, when the Allied forces commenced operations to push the German army back out of France, culminating in the fall of the Third Reich.


It has been awhile since I added anything to my son's United States army, and since he received a lot of items for his High School graduation, it was time to get some of those items on the painting table.

This week I completed his US Army 75mm Pack Howitzer, he has been lacking in some artillery, so I thought this would be a good start.

The plan will be to try and get in a game tonight after my son gets off to work.  We have to get a Bolt Action game in on D-Day.

Bolt Action: United States 'Sniper Team'

After our game this past Sunday, I had my son cut up a 'Sniper Team' for his US army.  Seeing how he had extra models from his 'Rangers' box, this would be a good use for two of them.  Also since the 'Rangers' box came with a 'Flamethrower Team', I also had him get me these two models also.  I figure I might as well paint all four at the same time.

For the very first time with these four models, I painted the eyes after I applied the wash.  I really like the way they turned out and will more than likely continue to paint them this way (when I decide to do eyes on my models)......

Bolt Action: United States 'Rangers-Veterans Squad 1'

After getting some terrain built for gaming table in the garage this past week, I also was able to start on my son's US Rangers squad.

The rules for the US Rangers call for a 11 man unit, we decided to build this unit to 12 men so that we he can also play them as a Veteran unit if he elects to do so.  The 12th man would be the addition of a 2nd BAR to the unit.

I do not have a steady hand to paint 'patches' and 'emblems' on units, but I made an effort to somewhat paint the 'Rangers' patch on each of the arms.  This way he can easily identify them as 'Rangers' or 'Veterans' on the gaming table from the rest of his Infantry.

I also labeled the post and pictures as "1" just in case in the future he decides to add a second unit.

Bolt Action: United States 'Medic'

Well at least for now, the United States army is completed, a little over 1000 points.  The Rangers/Vets are currently being assembled and may hit the painting table this weekend, but I am also debating on painting a Sniper Team for my Soviet army.

My son now has a fully painted US army for him to hit the tabletops with.

Bolt Action: United States 'Regular Infantry Squad 4'

Coming down to the final stretch for the initial models for my son's United States army.  As of now this is the final Infantry Squad that needs to be painted (Rangers/Vets will be coming in the near future).  These 12 guys along with his Medic will complete his initial 1000 point army.

Once the Medic is completed, we will most likely move onto assembling the Germans, and also look at what options I would like to add to my Soviet army along with the US army.

Bolt Action: United States 'M3A1 Half-Track'

As I mentioned earlier today, as I was airbrushing the Sherman M4A3 75MM, I also decided to do my son's other a vehicle, a M3A1 Half-Track.

I am very pleased on how the Half-Track came out.

Vehicles are all done for now, so it's back to some more infantry, I have one more infantry squad and a medic to paint and his initial 1000 point army will be completed.

The 'Rangers' are currently being assembled so there is still some time before they hit the painting table.

Bolt Action: United States 'Sherman M4A3 75MM'

Taking a little break from painting US Infantry, last night I broke out the new Iwata airbrush that I used on my Soviet T-34/85 and applied the basecoats on my son's US vehicles.  Then the vehicles moved to the painting table to be finished up.

Up first we have a 'Sherman M4A3 75MM' Tank.
