Daily Chronicle: 12/31/2010 End Of 2010

Well this is the last post for 2010 and like most hobby/gaming blogs that posted today, this post will see how we did for the goals we set for 2010.

Painting Points: December 2010

It's the final month and day of 2010 and to recap the 'Painting Points' for 2010.  Just like November, December was not a 'high' month regarding actual Painting Points, but it was another good month in regards to getting models finished.

This past month I have only been painting Warmachine models, so here is a quick breakdown on what was completed:

WM: Cygnar Trencher Master Gunner (Solo)

I usually do not like to double post models in the same day, but 2010 is coming to an end tonight so I wanted to get the last of the models up on the blog that I painted this year before we move into 2011 tomorrow.

WM: Cygnar Captain Maxwell Finn (Solo)

Here is the last of the Cygnar models my son received for Christmas "Captain Maxwell Finn".

"Finn" will be used mostly in a themed "Trencher" list that he'll run occasionally with "Siege", that is of course only when he wants to take a break from playing with "Stryker".

I am quite please on how the 'yellow' insignia turned out on "Finn".  I'm not ne who does yellow too often, but the P3 paint did a god job.

WM: Protectorate High Exemplar Kreoss (Warcaster)

My first attempt ever for painting a Protectorate of Menoth model.  Santa had brought a 15 point army for my son and I was itching to try painting one of these guys.  I've been contemplating on how I was going to paint the 'white' for this army.  I really do not like painting white.  I like to 'speed paint' and white just takes to long.... lol...

Here is what I did for my attempt at 'Protectorate White':

First; Primer the entire model with 'flat white' spray.  I really enjoy priming with 'black' since black allows you to be a little sloppy and the model still looks good.  With white you have to spend more time applying your base coats in order not to show any white in the crevices.

Second; I base coated the model using all P3 paints.  The 'white' areas were base coated with 'Menoth White Base'.

Third; With the entire model now base coated with the colors I wanted to use, I 'washed' the entire model with GW 'Gryphnne Sephia'.  I felt that if I used 'Devlan Mud', the crevices in the cloak would be too dark.

Fourth; With the 'wash' now dry, it was time for final highlights.  The red areas were highlighted with 'Sanguine Highlight'.  All the white areas were now painted with 'Menoth White Highlight' and make sure to try and leave some of the base coat and wash showing in the crevices.

Fifth; I then decided to use GW 'Badab Black' wash and apply just a 'fine' amount on the red cloth and on some of the metal areas, specifically on the mask.

All in all, I think "Kreoss" came out looking pretty good for tabletop.  Now we shall see how the 'white' looks like when I attempt a Warjack.  This wont be for awhile, still too much Cygnar to paint.

WM: Cygnar Major Marcus 'Siege' Brisbane (Warcaster)

My son finally received his third Warcaster "Major Marcus 'Siege' Brisbane" for his Cygnar army on Christmas.

For the current Warmachine League that we are participating in at or local game store (Empire Games) one of the 'Achievement's you can earn is to play a game with a fully painted Warcaster.  You can earn this achievement three times as long as it is three different Warcasters.  With that being said, I had to get 'Siege' up on the painting table ASAP so my son can earn another achievement.

WM: Cygnar Ol Rowdy (Warjack)

Cygnar's pride and joy, my son's "baby" (as he like to call him) is now finished.

Since this is the "Warjack" of Cygnar for my son's "Stryker", I wanted to spend a little more time painting this model, but at the same time to make sure the scheme matches to what I am already painting.

In the end, I am very happy with the way he turned out.

WM: Cygnar Squire (Solo)

Up first from my son's Christmas presents is the Cygnar "Squire".

With this guy I wanted him to match more of his existing Warjacks rather than how Privateer Press painted their "Squire".  Currently I have no shades of white on any of his Warjacks so I wanted to go more with the blue's on this guy.

"Squire" will make a nice 2 point filler to any list that my son plays.  The ability to ad an extra 'Focus' will be beneficial.

Christmas Aftermath

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas the other day and received all the new miniatures that they wanted.  For our family since we are Eastern Orthodox and follow the original calendar, our religious Christmas is January 7th.  To make it easier for the kids growing up though we tell the kids that December 25th is the day that 'Santa' deliveries his presents.  So on December 25th, the kids get toys from 'Santa' and on January 7th they get toys and gifts from 'Mom and Dad'.

Unfortunately for me, Santa did not bring me any new miniatures, I still have January 7th to hope for.  Santa did bring my oldest boy plenty of miniatures that will be keeping me busy painting for the rest of 2010 and into 2011.

All my son has singing leading to Christmas was (not literally, but close enough) "All I want for Christmas is my "Ol Rowdy", "Ol Rowdy"...... so here is what Santa delivered to my boy:

Warmachine
Protectorate of Menoth
Protectorate of Menoth "Battlegroup" (classic)
Unit: "Choir Acolyte's"
Solo: "The Covenant of Menoth"
Enough points for a 15 point army.

Cygnar
Warcaster: "Major Marcus Siege Brisbane"
Solo: "Squire"
Solo: "Captain Maxwell Finn"
Warjack: "Firefly"
Warjack: "Ol Rowdy", yes he got his "Baby" as he calls it......

Games Workshop
Warhammer Fantasy
Core: High Elf "Spearmen"
Special: High Elf "Dragon Princes of Caledor"
Special: High Elf "Phoenix Guard" x2

He has has enough High Elves to keep him busy for awhile.  Now we just have to find some more time and squeeze in some Fantasy games.

Time to hit the painting table........

WM: Khador Marauder (Warjack)

This past Monday night along with the "Strakhov" model I finished on Wednesday, I also picked up a "Classic Marauder".

Well this morning he hit the painting table.  By lunch time his base was ready to be painted, and by 3:00 PM he hit the gaming table for his Khador debut.

Using his special attack 'Combo Smite' is just perfect when played right.  I was able to pull it off twice.  The first time on a Cygnar Light Warjack "Hunter" and "Yuri" came charging in to finish him off and with the second attempt slamming the Cygnar Heavy Warjack "Defender" into "Stryker" and "Spriggan" then finshed off "Stryker" for the win.

This was just another 15 point game (I really enjoy the small point games) and "Strakhov" had also made his debut.  I am still undecided on him.  I need to play a few more games with him and really see what he can do.  'Superiority' is a nice spell and his 'Cinder Bomb' can be useful to block a charge.

I know present you with "Marauder"

Battle Report: WM Khador vs. Cryx

Even though I have played a little over a dozen Warmachine games in the last month I have yet to write up a 'Battle Report'.  As I mentioned last night, yesterday I had a 'League' game with a friend of mine.  For our league, you can choose any point size game and you are allowed to play with 'Territories'.  We drafted three 'Territories' before the league started and after each win you can either gain a random territory or take one that your opponent has wagered.  Each game you are allowed to play with up to three territories.  The 'Territories' add some benefits to the game, but are not overpowering.  You are allowed to play 2 games per week, and you earn 1 point for a Loss, 2 points for a Win by Caster, and 3 points for a Win by Scenario.  You can also gain a bonus point for other achievements (i.e. painted Warcaster, painted Battlegroups and so on).

I was playing my Khador army, and Rob was playing his Cryx.  We decided on a 15 point game and Rob was playing with a territory that allowed him 1 extra point.  Here are the lists:

Khador:
Vladimir, The Dark Prince (*5pts)
* Berserker
(6pts)
* Juggernaut
(7pts)
Manhunter
(2pts)
Manhunter
(2pts)
Yuri the Axe
(3pts

Cryx:
Iron Lich Asphyxious (*6pts)
* Cankerworm
(5pts)
* Reaper
(7pts)
Bane Knights (Leader and 9 Grunts)
(10pts)

Rob rolled  for the scenario and were playing 'Killing Field'.
I won the die roll and elected to go second.  I knew his Cryx army was much faster than my Khador and with my army I did not think I had a chance to control 7 points for the Scenario win and I had to go for the quick Caster kill.  So I was trying to set him up so I could get a Turn 2 Win.

Turn 1:
Cryx:  Rob ran his Unit of Bane Knights up closed to two of the objectives, and positioned his Cankerworm near the third objective.  He ran the Reaper up 12" and moved Asphyxious up 6" and casted a range spell that back fired and the AOE landed on Reaper and did a few points of damage.

Khador:  I had my two Manhunters and Yuri up in the woods due to Advanced Deployment so I positioned these close to objective 'three' and within striking range to get a charge on the Cankerworm during my next turn.  Berserker and Juggernaut both ran up but not the full 8".  Vlad followed behind Juggernaut.  Turn 1 was now over.

Turn 2:
Cryx:  Rob stretched his Bane Knights so he can control objectives 'one' and 'two'.  Cankerworm was still positioned near objective 'three' but not quite touching it.  Rob moved up his Reaper and tried using Reaper's harpoon on the Juggernaut, but failed to due any damage, so it was ineffective.  Asphyxious moved up and did his ranged 'cloud' effect at Juggernaut.  He was just out of range, so the cloud deviated just a bit.  Rob's Turn 1 was now over.

Khador:  It was now or never for me.  I used one of my territories that granted me (once per game) +1 SPD and used it on Berserker.  Berserker went and Slammed the Reaper and it was a direct hit, unfortunately the Reaper was only slammed back 1" and just missed hitting Asphyxious.  I positioned Vlad just behind Berserker and still within 6" of Juggernaut.  Vlad 'popped' his 'Feat' and cast 'Boundless Charge' on the Juggernaut.  The Juggernaut just barely being able to see the Reaper from the cloud effect charged the Reaper 13" (4"+4"+2"+3") and was within melee range of the Reaper and Asphyxious.  For my initial attack, I decided to just use my 'Open Fist' on the Reaper.  I was saving my 'Ice Axe' for the win.  Damage was applied to the Reaper.  Now it was time to finish Asphyxious.  I boosted my attack with the 'Ice Axe' and scored a critical hit.  He was now stationary.  The 'Ice Axe' also did 14 points of damage.  I decided not to boost that damage roll.  I paid a Focus point for another attack with the 'Ice Axe'.  Since he was stationary, my attack automatically hit.  It was time to end it.  I boosted my damage roll (just to be safe)(yes, saving the Focus for another attack would have been better) and Asphyxious' head went flying off the table.

Win for Khador.

Thanks Rob for the game and being a sport and allowing us to D6 the call on Juggernaut being able to see the Reaper from the cloud effect.

WM: Khador Kommander Strakhov (Warcaster)

As much as I love collecting different armies, I also want to collect all the models for my Khador army and my son's Cygnar army.  The other night I was contemplating  picking up a few models start a Cryx army, or add some more to my Khador.  After a long decision (yea it was tough) I decided to pick up two more models for Khador.  Cryx will just be another small 15 point army, but Khador is my pride and joy.

The decision was to pick up another Warcaster "Kommander Strakhov" (I really like the look of this model.  I purchased this model for the looks and not the playability, but we'll see how he does later on), and I also picked up another Warjack, Classic "Marauder".

This morning I had a Warmachine league game scheduled with a friend of mine at 11 AM, but I had a few hours before than to get a start on my new Warcaster "Kommander Strakhov".  I was able to get most of him completed before I headed out and when I got back I finished up the base and sprayed the matte coat.

WM: Cygnar Long Gunners Infantry (Unit)

I finally was able to get some painting done this Winter Vacation and completed my son's Cygnar "Long Gunner Infantry" Unit.

We've been busy the last two days with outdoor activities (mainly hiking), but I was able to start on these guys yesterday, then woke up early today (to take the wife out for her birthday breakfast before she started for work) came home and I was able to finish them.

Nothing really too fancy with them (in regards to highlighting) mainly just wanted to get them out in tabletop quality (they are infantry after all).  I still have 4 more Long Gunners for the full Unit of 10, but this will be good to get him going for now.

First up we have the "Long Gunners Leader" followed by his "Grunts".

WM: Khador Berserker (Warjack)

After a very very long week at work, yesterday officially kicked-off vacation for me through out the rest of 2010.  So with yesterday being my first day off, painting had to commence.

On January 2nd, 2011 we are having a small 15 pt tourney with certain restrictions ( 1 Caster/1 Warjack / 1 Unit / 1 Solo, any leftover points can be used on additional Warjacks or UA's).  So in order to get 2 Warjacks into my lists, I needed to get a 'cheap' Warjack for Khador.  So that then brings us to "Berserker", the lowest cost Warjack for Khador (6 points) and he can definitely hold his own.  Only downside, use too much 'Focus' and you may destroy yourself.

Last weekend I was able to pick up my "Berserker" at a local game store (Gamers Inn) was able to build him last weekend, but do to work being so busy, only yesterday I was able to paint him.

I bring you "Berserker"

WM: Khador Winter Guard Mortar Crew (Unit)

Just taking a little breather from work right now and posting the latest addition to my Khador army.

As I mentioned yesterday, I was able to work on this model over this past weekend.  I am hoping to get my next Warjack done this week, but it is looking to be another weekend job.

Anyways here is my "Winter Guard Mortar Crew", they will play nicely alongside my "Kovnik Grigorovich" I completed a few weeks ago.
