Gathering in the Desert 2010: Army Displays

As I'm waiting here in the Phoenix airport waiting for my flight back to Chicago (delayed due to Chicago weather) I figured I'd upload the army pictures from this weekends GitD 2010.  A lot of beautiful armies were present this past weekend.  Enjoy the pics.

Gathering in the Desert 2010: Sunday Update

Gathering in the Desert 2010 is now officially over.  From the responses so far from all our player's, it seems like everyone had a good time.  Tim K did a superb job organizing the event for 2010.  I was not able to help out as much as I usually do since originally I was not planning on attending for personal reasons, but I tried to help remotely as much as possible.  Since I was able to attend, I helped abit and I was able to play the "ringer" army for two games yesterday.
Here are the winners from Gathering in the Desert 2010:
Best Overall: Tom Keegan
Best General: Kyle Toth
2nd General: Tim Cornstubble
3rd General: Gary Lane
Best Sportsman: Tim McKnight
2nd Sportsman: ?
3rd Sportsman: ?
Best Appearance: Brent Sinclair
Congrats to all the winners.  Once I get the names of the "?" I'll update the post.

Below are some pictures taken from Sunday's action.

Gathering in the Desert 2010: Saturday Update

Day 1 is now officially over for Gathering in the Desert 2010.  3 games down and 2 to go for Sunday.  Everyone seems to be having a great time.  We had 23 players show up this year, gaining some new faces and losing some old faces.  With the odd number of players, I got to play "ringer" for games 1 and 2.  I have not really played LotR since AdeptiCon 2009, but it was good time.  Here are some pictures from Saturday's action.

Gathering in the Desert 2010: Friday Update

Gathering in the Desert 2010 has officially kicked off last nigh at Empire Games in Mesa Arizona.  Brent from Chicago was running a fun little tournament called March to Mount Doom Madness Tournament when arrived.  The March to Mount Doom tournament will feature a unique “bracket-style” pairing system and players will play their way trough a single elimination tournament during the course of the evening. This event is being offered as a “free” add-on event for the Gathering in the Desert tournament.  Brent also had awards for Best Overall and Best Theme for the event.  The award for Best Overall went to a fellow named Kyle, and Best Theme went to John P.  It was a nice way to relax and have some playing games before Saturday and Sunday's events take place.  Here a re a few shots of the event from last night (not too many).  I plan on having more pictures of today and tomorrow's festivities.

Daily Chronicle: 2/18/2010: Assembled Termagants; GitD

Just got back from lunch with another Warhammer friend Gyan here in the Valley.  It's nice to go out once in a while to just socialize instead of always gaming.  It was a great lunch and I'm looking forward to getting some games in with Gyan once we come back for good.

Last night I finished assembling my 2 units of Termagants, and if you read last nights post, my 4 Hormagaunts are also assembled (mis-packaged box).

Termagants

I wont have much time the rest of the weekend to purchase/assembly any more.  So it looks like the Nids will be waiting until April (unless I get really bored in March back in Chicago).

Well, tonight kicks off "Gathering in the Desert 2010".  There are still some spots remaining, so if you are local and want to get in on a 2 day LotR Indy GT, swing by Empire Games tonight or tomorrow morning to check in.  The full schedule can be found on LotRIndyGT.com.  Brent from Chicago will be running a "March to Mt. Doom Madness Tournament" tonight that will be free to all GitD Players.  Just a nice small fun tournament to relax before the 2 full days of GT gaming.  I'll be swinging by tonight to chat with friends that came in to town and with the organizer Tim.  I'll bring my camera along and take some pictures of tonight's actions.

W40K: Assembling Tyranid Termagants

Well, as I mentioned earlier today I was going to change my Tyranid list to match the model quantity in the box.  So I started assembling my Termagants this afternoon.  I assembled the first box of 12 without any problems.  I then opened the second box and started to cut the pieces away from the sprue and I noticed claws on the sprue.  I said to myself why are there claws here.  I doubled checked the box and it said Termagants.  I check the other 2 sprues in the box and they were correct Termagant sprues.  So it looks like I received 1 sprue of Hormagaunts in my box of Termagants.  Without that 1 sprue, I can only build 20 Termagants.  So it looks like I'm back to 2 units of 10 Termagants.  Hopefully when I buy my Hormagaunts I'll get all the correct sprues and then I'll be able to run 2 units of 14 Hormagaunts.

Daily Chronicle: 2/18/2010

Just a quick update for today.  Last night I met with my friend Ian for a game of Warhammer Fantasy over at Empire Games.  Ian is still play testing lists from the new Beastmen book, and I had brought along my Dwarf list that I had used at Core Competency 2009.  Another great game I had with a friend this week.  The game went really really fast.  We finished 6 Turns in just under 2 hours.  Not much Magic, my Shooting was gone after Turn 3 and not much Movement for my Dwarfs.  For the sake of fun, his Lord (not sure exactly what it was) went up against my Dwarf Lord on Shieldbearers.  He managed 2 wounds on my Lord, but I managed to win combat and run down his.  In a tournament environment Ian would have charge the unit without the Lord and run them down.  We wanted to have fun and let the Lord's battle it out.  The Dwarfs managed to pull a Draw against the Beastmen.  It was around 1350 - 1550 in favor of the Beastmen.

Well, I have now also officially started my Tyranid project.  I picked up 2 boxes of Termagants last night.  It will give me something to do tonight.  I also slightly changed my list for 1750/2000.  I am being "cheap".  Instead of units where I may have some "extra" models from the boxes, I decided to round out my units based on the quantity of models in the box.  For example, I had 2 units of 10 Termagants, I will now have 2 units of 12 Termagants.  I'll post up my new lists when I have some more time later tonight or tommorow.

Daily Chronicle: 2/16/2010: Tyranid Paint Scheme

During last nights epic battle between the Salamander's and Red Corsairs, my friend Chris and I started talking about what kind of color scheme I was looking to accomplish for my new Tyranid army. I'm not the greatest painter, and I look for shortcuts to painting so I can have a fully painted army on the table to play with.  I prefer to play with painted armies as much as possible unless I'm just trying something out.  So I had mentioned to Chris that I really loved the Leviathan paint scheme, but I really did not want to paint up white.  So I was thinking of doing the majority of the model with bone, and then purple for the armour.  Chris mentioned a person named "BeastsofWar" on YouTube and a demo they did on painting their Tyranids.  Here is a link to the video:

They went with a basecoat of White, followed with 2 coats of Sephia Wash.  Instead of doing White and 2 coats of Wash, I think I am going to go with Bone from "The Army Painter" and 1 coat of Sephia Wash.  The rest of the steps I think I will follow the same as the video, minus the step on doing Black Wash over the Blue Wash.  I like the look of the Blue Wash as it is.

I was planning on using the "dip" method for the Tyranids (brushing on the dip like I have been for my IG), but I think that this method will be just as fast.  It's still going to be a little over a month before I start with any paint on them, I'm still purchasing the models (at least I plan to really soon).

So there you have it, I have decided on my color scheme for the Tyranids.  I really love the blue armour shown above.

Battle Report: W40K Salamanders vs. Red Corsairs

So last night I was able to make out to Empire Games in Mesa, AZ and met up with a friend of mine.  We had scheduled to get a game of W40K in while I was in town this week.  I've been wanting to try out my son's Salamanders army at 1750 points and never had a chance, and this was the time to bring them out.

My opponent (Chris A) was playing a Chaos Space Marine army, the "Red Corsairs", his army consisted of the following.

Red Corsairs
Daemon Prince w/ Wings, Mark of Khorne
Huron Blackheart
8 Khorne Bezerkers w/ Skull Champion and Power Weapon; Rhino
8 Khorne Bezerkers w/ Skull Champion and Power Weapon; Rhino
10 Chaos Space Marines w/ 2 melta guns and Champion w/ Powerfist; Rhino
10 Chaos Space Marines w/ 2 flamers and Champion w/ Powerfist: Rhino
6 Terminators w/ combi-melta, Reaper Autocannon, 2 powerfists
Defiler
Vindicator

I went with the following list:

Salamanders
Vulkan He'Stan
5 Terminators w/ Thunder Hammer & Storm Shield
2 Dreadnought's w/ Multi-melta, CCW
10 Marines w/ Flamer, Multi-melta; Sgt w/ Power Weapon; Razorback w/ TL HB
10 Marines w/ Flamer, Multi-melta; Sgt w/ Power Weapon; Razorback w/ TL HB
10 Marines w/ Flamer, Multi-melta; Sgt w/ Power Weapon
5 Assault Marines w/ Flamer; Sgt w/ Power Weapon, Plasma Pistol
2 Attack Bikes w/ Multi-melta
Land Raider Crusader

We decide to play "Kill Points" with a "Pitched Battle" deployment.  You see, I played my friend Chris in Game 1 of the Wild West Shootout back in October with my Dark Angels, so I was looking for revenge.

I cannot remember all the details (I'm bad at that), and I left my camera at my parents house (I packed the camera just for this game too).  I was off to a very quick start.  Since most of his army was mech in the Rhino's, I had no problems destroying them with all my Multi-meltas.  Through 3 turns I had a 7-3 Kill Point lead.  Chris started to make a comeback in Turn 4 destroying a Razorback and a Marine squad to bring the score to 7-5.  We decided that due to time we would end the game after Turn 5.  So Chris had one final turn to try and tie the game or take the lead.  Unfortunately he fell short and I was able to get 2 more KP's in bottom of 5 for a Salamander victory of 9-5.

Once of the biggest highlights of the game was a multiple combat we had that involved Vulkan, Salamander Terminators, Huron, Demon Prince, Chaos Terminators.  Vulkan was able to bring down the Demon Prince while only suffering 1 wound himself.  Once the DP was destroyed, the Defiler enter combat against Vulkan and Vulkan suffered his fate.  A Salamander Dreadnought was within range of that combat, so the Dreadnought attacked the Defiler and eventually brought down the Defiler and both Walkers were already suffering "immobilized" results.  The Salamander Terminators were able to take down the Chaos Terminators and Huron with there Thunder Hammers and they're great 3+ Inv Save.  It was a fun/intense battle.

I really enjoyed last night's game and I'm looking forward to more friendlies when I move back.
Regarding the list I played, I can see a few changes may be needed.  My Assault Squad really did not too much.  I may drop them for a Thunder Canon (I hear they are that good) and another Razorback for Squad 3..... oh wait, this is my son's army.....

Daily Chronicle: 2/15/2010

Well, I finally made it into Arizona on Saturday night.  After a really slow start (broken alternator belt on Thursday night) I could not leave until Friday morning after the car got fixed.  Spent most of yesterday just relaxing and picking up a few items at the store.

Tonight I'll be heading over to Empire Games for a game of W40K with a good friend of mine.  I'm going to try out my son's 1750pt Salamander list, we'll see how it goes.  I've been wanting to try that army out with all the twin-linked Flamers and Meltas.

I may also start to pick up a few models for my Tyranid army.  Not quite sure about that, I wasnt expecting a towing and a repair bill for the car.

Daily Chronicle: 2/11/2010

All packed and ready to go.  In  a few hours I'll be making the drive out to "sunny" Arizona so I can thaw out my body.  I'll be dropping off one of our vehicles and then flying back home on the 22nd, only to return with the moving truck at the end of March.

I planned this trip just right, I now get to stay the weekend of the 20th & 21st for "Gathering in the Desert" a LotR Indy GT that my friend Tim ("Cursed Treasures") and I have thrown for the last 2 years.  I cant believe this is the third annual event already. If you do not have plans for that weekend and love to play LotR SBG, there is still plenty of room in the tournament.  It's going to be a great weekend.

I also have a Warhammer 40K game lined up with one of my friends while I'm there, and I'm also trying to line a Warhammer Fantasy game.  We'll see how much time I have (work is getting busy too which is great).

As long as the drive goes safe, the next 'Daily Chronicle' will either be late Saturday night or Sunday morning.

W40K: IG 9th Vostroyans 2000 Point List

I believe I finally decided on a list for the 9th Vostroyans.  Since mainly my 114th Cadians are a mix of Foot/Mech (with the option to go fully Mech), I decided that for the Vostroyans I will go fully Mechanized for them.  This way the 144th Cadians can stay as Foot/Mech, and I'll play the Vostroyans fully Mech.  When I finally do play Apocalypse games, I'll have plenty of fire power when combing both regiments.

Like I said yesterday, I really wanted to go heavy with the Tanks, so here is what I came up with:

2000 Pts
HQ

Company Command Squad w/ Carapace Armour, 3 Flamers; Chimera (140)

Troops:
Veteran Squad w/ Carapace Armour, 3 Plasmaguns, Heavy Bolter; Chimera (210)

Daily Chronicle: 2/10/2010

If you had not realized yesterday, but I finally decided on the "official" regiment number for my Imperial Guard Cadians.  Since our AdeptiCon 40K TT army is based out of the Imperial Armour Volume 3 "The Taros Campaign", I decided to go with the 114th Cadians for my Imperial Guard.  The 114th Cadians will be my IG army that I will always expand on, but that does not mean I would not like to do any of the other "flavors" of the Imperial Guard, which leads me to the following.

I am going to definitely do the Tyranids as my next W40K army, but I have always wanted an Imperial Guard Vostroyan army since they were released in 2006.  I really love the look of the models for that army.  So I think that while I am painting up the Tyranids, I will also slowly start on the Vostroyans.  I am not looking for a "tournament" list for the Vostroyans, just something fun to play with.  I think with the Vostroyans I am going to lean towards using a lot of the Leman Russ variants, Basilisks, and Sentinels.  Since I currently only have one Leman Russ for the 114th Cadians, I think having squadrons of them would be fun to play with. I do not want to play the same style of army just with different miniatures, so I'll make this one on the Heavy Tank side.  We'll see how it plays out.  I'll obviously have to fill out the core Troop choices with Vostroyan First Born Squads, then the rest will be filled out with Tanks and Sentinels.  I know, I'm "dreaming" way ahead of myself, but they will be done.

Nothing new to report on the painting side of the hobby today.  I have 4 Heavy Bolters, 4 Chimera's and 1 Hellhound to finish for the 114th.  I was going to start on the Heavy Bolters today, but seeing how I'm leaving tomorrow night for Arizona, I really did not want to start them and not be able to finish.  So the rest of the 114th will have to wait until I get back the week of the 22nd.

Here is the latest update for the 114th Cadians.

W40K: IG 114th Cadian 2nd Infantry Platoon

As I mentioned in yesterday's 'Daily Chronicle' I was able to finish up the 2nd Infantry Platoon for my 114th Cadian Imperial Guard.  The Platoon Command will actually have an Autocannon instead of two Guardsman (you can see my list change here) but I thought I should finish up the original two men also.

Daily Chronicle: 2/9/2010

Most of my posts are usually showing off a unit that I recently painted, possibly a new list that I came up with or an event that I will be attending.  Very rarely do I post any daily updates.  So a new feature for me will be the 'Daily Chronicle'.  Most of the news will be 'miniature' related, but some may not be.  There are days when I'm just working on a unit and I'm not ready for a picture.  So here is the first installment of the 'Daily Chronicle'.

Lets start with something non gaming related.....  today is my 14th Wedding Anniversary..  yea, wow, 14 years...  I cant believe it....We'll probably go out for a "cheaper" dinner tonight...  (funds are being saved for relocation).

Now what have I been working on.  The 2nd Infantry Platoon for my 114th Cadians are almost done.  I'm on "Step 5C" for all the bases.  I hope to get them done today and then matte sprayed in the morning.  Pictures should also be coming tomorrow.  I decided to wait until the entire Platoon is complete before I posted any pictures.

That's it for today....

W40K: IG 1750 Fully Mechanized List

Along with the 1750 Mech/Foot list I have posted, I think I will be trying out this Fully Mechanized list once in awhile for fun.  It's all about having fun with our toy soldiers isn't it?  Why not try out different builds since the models will already be assembled and painted.

W40K: IG 1500/1750/2000 Lists Take 2

I decided to make a few little changes to my Imperial Guard 1500/1750/2000 point Mech/Foot lists.  I'll be dropping two Guardsman from the Platoon Commands and replacing them with Autocannon's along with dropping the Carapace Armour from Vet Squad #3.  This also freed some points to add "Smoke" to the Devil Dog's

W40K: IG 1st Infantry Platoon Command

Last night, going in today I was able to finish my Platoon Command for my 1st Infantry Platoon.  After finishing the Command, I then realized I'll be making a small change to the Command.  I am going to be swapping out two Guardsman for an Autocannon Team.  I'll be making this change for my 1750 and 2000 point Mech/Foot lists.  That is the nice thing about Imperial Guard.  There are so many little changes you can make to your list if you want to try new things out.  In my 1750 Fully Mech list I'll probably be running all Vet Squads so the Platoon Commands will not be needed.  We'll see which lists I like best.  I'll be trying them both out and they both have their advantages.

W40K: IG 1st Infantry Platoon; Squads 1 & 2

I already had Squad 1 of my 1st Infantry Platoon done prior to the new year, but I did complete the bases yesterday.  I also finished up Squad 2 of the 1st Infantry Platoon.  The Heavy Bolters are currently missing from the Squads as they will all be painted at the same time.

Tutorial: Basing The Imperial Guard

Usually when painting my bases for my armies, I do a basecoat on the entire base, then do a light dry brush usually of "Bleached Bone", paint the bands with "Bestial Brown" and add some static grass.  With my Imperial Guard army, my teammate for the AdeptiCon 40K TT wanted the bases to look a little bit different with a few more colors of dry brushing.  We are not using any static grass on our bases (since we are going with a desert theme) but I may decide to go back and add the grass once AdeptiCon is over.

If your interested, here are the steps that I am using for the Imperial Guard bases.

Step 1: Add Sand To The Base.
I use regular white glue diluted with water and apply GW Sand to the base.  I let the glue fully dry before proceeding to Step 2.
Step 2: Prime The Base.
I always Primer my bases along with the models.  This helps keep the sand in place.  Since my Imperial Guard are primed with The Army Painter "Desert Yellow", that is what is used here.
Step 3: "Dip" The Base.
Since I am using the "dip" method for my Imperial Guard, while "dipping" the model with my brush I let some of the dip get onto the base.  I make sure to place a nice even coat on the base.  The "dip" also provide another layer of protection for keeping the sand in place.  When I do not use the "dip" method to paint, this step is always skipped.

Step 4: Base Coat The Base.
I use GW "Scorched Brown" and apply a nice coat on the entire base.

Step 5a: Dry Brush The Base.
I use GW "Desert Yellow" with a medium dry brush for the first part.

Step 5b: Dry Brush The Base.
Next I use GW "Bubonic Brown" with a light dry brush for the second part.

Step 5c: Dry Brush The Base.
Then I use GW "Kommando Khaki" with a light dry brush for the final part.

Step 6: Paint The Band.
All of my Warhammer 40K armies I try and use the same color for the bands.  I use GW "Bestial Brown" and apply two coats to the band.

So these are all the steps I am using to get the bases done for my Imperial Guard army.  You can see why I was debating on waiting till I moved to finish the bases.  Since I have time now, I am going to get them done.

Here is one last picture with some GW "Glade Grass" added to the base (not glued, just laid on for the picture).  Should I add the Static Grass do the bases?  Please comment and let me know what you think.

W40K: IG Special Weapons Squads

In January I finished up four Special Weapons Squads for the Imperial Guard and I did not post the pictures.  The reason being, the bases/matte coat were not done on them.  I was originally going to wait till we moved back to AZ and get all the bases done with the idea being that I wanted to concentrate on my AdeptiCon armies.  Seeing how I am now all done with my AdeptiCon armies, I decided to base/matte coat these squads.  Started the bases on these guys last night and finished them up today.

For future lists I'll be able to interchange these models with other units, but for now they will start off as Special Weapons Squads.

WFB: Wood Elves Glade Guard (Unit #3)

Well it only took over two years, but I finally finished the three units of Glade Guard Archers for my son's Warhammer Wood Elves army.  I was not really motivated in Fantasy too much over the last two years, but a new 'league' that we are currently playing here in Illinois has helped get me motivated.  As you can see from all the Dark Elves and Wood Elves that I have recently completed.  I still enjoy playing 40K more than Fantasy, but I like the Fantasy 'realm' a little bit more.

Anyways, here are pictures of the third unit.

That is one more item to cross of the list for February.  Now I believe I am done painting Fantasy until we officially move.

Gaming in the Northwest Valley (AZ)

Another great gaming store in the Phoenix area is Imperial Outpost Games.  They are in a part of Phoenix known as the 'West Valley'.  To be more accurate, the 'Northwest'.  The owner is great guy and also loves to play the games that he sells.  Unfortunately IOG is long haul from the 'East Valley' so I rarely do get to make the trip out there.  I have played and ran tournaments at IOG and I do try and get out there every once in a awhile.

If you ever on the west side of Phoenix, check out:

Soon To Be Local Flagship (AZ)

As I said in a couple of earlier posts, I'll be relocating back to Arizona the first weekend in April.  We'll be heading back out to a part of Phoenix known as the 'East Valley'.  The first time around in Arizona, a new gaming store called Empire Games in Mesa, AZ opened up their doors in September 2008, we relocated back to Chicago in January 2009 so I had only a few months at the store.

Not to put down any of the other stores in the Valley, but Empire Games is a great store to game at.  Hours are great (9:00 PM weeknights / 12:00 AM weekends), and their gaming tables are just perfect, 20 of them to be exact and plenty of terrain to use on the tables.

Some of the items that Empire Games has to offer:
- Extremely knowledgeable staff
- 20 expertly built and clean gaming tables

Empire Games is also used to host many of the gaming tournaments in the Valley.  'Gathering in the Desert' will be holding their 3rd annual event their the weekend of 2/20-2/21.  'Tide of War' a Warhammer Fantasy Battles GT and 'Battlefoams Wild West Shootout' a Warhammer 40K GT were also held their last year.

My plan is to find a place with a dedicated gaming room (for the really late night gaming), but I do plan on spending a lot of time back at Empire Games.

So if your ever in the 'East Valley' of Phoenix, make sure you check them out.
